Three men were Friday charged with being in possession of a large quantity of cocaine and marijuana that was found aboard a Trinidad-bound fishing vessel earlier this week. The fishing boat, MV Bismarck 2, was intercepted on January 18 by agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) allegedly with the narcotics aboard. The Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard assisted CANU in stopping the boat on the Demerara River. Appearing before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry were Captain Billy Glasgow, Steve Reddy and Mark Singh. They all pleaded not guilty and were remanded to prison until February 7 for another court appearance. CANU Prosecutor, Vic Puran told the court that Reddy arrangement to put the cocaine on the boat. Singh, the prosecutor explained, aided and abetted Reddy who collected that narcotic and placed it on the vessel. Defence Lawyer, Peter Hugh asked the court to take into consideration that Reddy was badly beaten. The magistrate advised that efforts be made before the prisoners are taken to the Georgetown Prison to get a doctors to examine Reddy. |

Now there has to an ever vigilant media and civil society to monitor this specific case because we all know only too well that these very criminals can end up being set scotch free because of some bogus technicality, disappearance of the evidence and many instances the case jacket or file.
There is no doubt that the obvious 'big fishes' that own the ship and its dangerous cargo are looking on and getting in line to unleash 'Operation Baksheesh' and the government of the day will gladly facilitate same because they are morally bankrupt. Ramotar must demonstrate that he is different than Jagdeo otherwise the YCT is standing by.
