One fisherman is hospitalized and three others are missing after their boat capsized while they were on their way to help rescue several of their colleagues who were attacked by pirates.

“So far the other three men have not been located. Searches are being conducted by the Joint Services assisted by public spirited persons, said police spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker.

Whittaker said that about 3’O Clock Saturday afternoon the fishing crew comprising Ganeshwar Reddy called ‘Smallie’ of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, Shafeek Khan, ‘Rackoo’ and ‘Kumar’, left in a fishing vessel from the Meadow Bank Wharf, East Bank Demerara.

They were carrying an additional outboard engine in order to render assistance to one of the fishing crews that was attacked and robbed by armed men in the Pomeroon River area.

Whittaker said subsequent reports received indicate that during Saturday night the boat capsized somewhere off the Suddie Coast due to heavy rainfall and rough waters.

Reddy managed to reach ashore at Exmouth, Essequibo Coast, at about 3:45 Sunday afternoon and has been admitted a patient at the Suddie Hospital.
