Two long-serving female members of the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR), citing major grievances, are taking a back-seat from the party in the wake of the 2011 general and regional elections. Well-placed sources say Dr. Faith Harding has resigned from the Central Executive of the party and Judith David-Blair from Bartica has retired altogether from politics. Insiders say Blair is preparing to submit her resignation in which she would request that her name be removed from the Top-Up and Regional Lists after consultations with her husband. She is also expected to say that she would be unavailable for future campaigning, candidature and other political work. Claiming that PNCR Leader Robert Corbin had a major role to play in selecting candidates, the source said she is upset that she was not made a Geographical Candidate but only a Top-Up candidate. Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com ) was told that Blair had turned down an invitation to be Regional Chairman, citing her Christian persuasion being inconsistent with activities like Regatta and the consumption of alcohol. Blair, though a staunch supporter of Carl Greenidge, is said to have felt unrewarded for her hard work that resulted in A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) landslide victory in Region Seven- Cuyuni Mazaruni. Sources say Blair, for her 10 years as a parliamentarian, will get two-thirds benefits, but she could have gotten seven-eights if she had served another two years. And Blair and her husband, according to the sources, are said to be perturbed that no senior PNC functionary ever visited him while he had been hospitalized for nine months at the And sources close to Faith Harding say she resigned from the Central Executive with effect from January 1, 2012. The sources close to Harding say she has become disillusioned with functioning of the Central Executive including the unilateral changing of collective decisions. According to the sources, Harding views that primaries to elect a presidential candidate as a “pappy show” after which the PNCR and David Granger sidelined her. Sources say that Harding was included a member of the Policy Committee only two weeks after representation was made by Carl Greenidge. Aubrey Norton and Mervyn Williams are also said to be very disgruntled at the fact that they have not been chosen to sit in the National Assembly, despite their tireless election campaigning. Blair has been a PNCR member since 1992 and Harding has been with that party for several decades. She was Public Service Minister up to 1992 when the PNC lost power. |
