Arnold Ramroop recounting when the gunman placed the firearm to his head on entering the grocery as he was cleaning the dirty floor.

Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo businessman, Arnold Ramroop, and his family were Monday robbed of GUY$7 million in cash and jewellery by two robbers who invaded their grocery.

Police spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker said the incident occurred around 11:10 AM when the men, one of whom was armed with a gun held 47-year old Ramroop, his wife and son at gunpoint.

One of the men then took his wife upstairs where she was reportedly forced to  hand over jewellery valued at GUY$5 million, GUY$2 million in cash and at least GUY$200,000 in phone cards.

A quantity of cell phone cards were also taken away by the men who escaped in a waiting motor car.

Ramroop told reporters that the gunman pistol gun-butted him and his son, Roopesh, to their heads. He explained that the men entered the shop as he was cleaning the white tiled floor. One of them immediately placed a gun to his head and ordered that he lie face down. They then closed the shop door and entered the Ramroop's home via the shop where they beat them.

On seeing the grocer's wife and son, they took them upstairs and successfully demanded the cash and jewellery. Arnold said one of the gunmen wanted to steal the television but his accomplice discouraged him from doing so.

Before leaving, they took tape from the store and tied the  Ramroops' hands behind their backs and their feet and left them in the kitchen. Roopesh said he was able to free himself and later his parents before raising an alarm.

Unconfirmed reports are that one of the men was seen earlier in the neighbourhood by another shop.

This is the latest in several multimillion dollar robberies to have occurred during the past two months.
