A 14 year old girl was Tuesday charged with attempted murder of her parents and siblings by lacing a meal with pesticide after her parents objected to her dating a neighbour.

Police Chief of Criminal Investigations, Assistant Commissioner Seelall Persaud said the girl was arraigned at the Mahaica Magistrates’ Court.

The girl of Handsome Tree, Mahaica was remanded to custody and would be held at the juvenile detention centre, Sophia. The teenager is expected to re-appear in court on February 21 before Magistrate Nyasha Hatmin.

She was charged with attempting to murder six members of her family. Two of them are still hospitalized at the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Persaud declined to give details of the evidence, instead preferring to say “put poison in the food because of conflicts in the family."

Prior to the charging and arraigning of the girl, investigators had told reporters that the girl had thrown pesticide in a meal of curried fish and rice.

Police have said that the family had been pressuring the girl to stop talking to the 19-year old boy.

The Mahaica River family were rushed to the GPHC on February 10 around 2:45 AM, suffering from food poisoning.
