Three policemen, who were told to arrest a suspect in the robbery of GUY$8 million in cash and jewellery from a goldsmith at Uitvlugt, were Friday arraigned on an indictable joint charge of robbery.

Lance Corporal Shandel Costello, 36, Constable Beepat Tajeram, 26, and Constable Delon Lyken, 22, were not required to plea and were remanded to prison.

Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton ordered that they re-appear in court on March 12.

Prosecutor Sergeant Gordon Mansfield objected on grounds of seriousness and prevalence of the offence.

Police say that on February 12 at Lodge Housing Scheme they robbed Leon Daniels of GUY$600,000 and a quantity of jewellery.

Detective Sergeant, Trevor Reid told the court that the three policemen were sent to Lodge to locate the suspect in the robbery at Uitvlugt earlier in the day. Rather than arresting the man, Reid alleged, they stole the valuables. A report was made and the trio was arrested.

59-year old Radha Krishna Chandra and his family were attacked and robbed by two men one of whom was armed with a gun. The incident occurred around 6:30 AM at Ocean View, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara. The jewellery was valued at GUY$6.5 million and the money totalled GUY$1.5 million. A laptop and five cellular phones were also stolen.
