Guyana’s women basketball team- stranded  in Antigua due to Redjet’s suspension of operations- is due return home later Tuesday, according to the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF).

GABF said Ansa Mc Al and Digicel teamed up to purchase the return tickets after efforts failed to contact senior officials of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport.

“Appeals were made to the corporate sponsors Ansa McAl and Digicel, since efforts to contact senior officials at the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture for assistance proved fruitless,” the GABF said in a statement.

Calls for help followed after they were “hard pressed to find additional funding to return home via LIAT,” GABF said.

The team and manager are due to arrive aboard a Caribbean Airlines flight.

They were Sunday crowned champions of the 12th Annual Gillian Brazier Basketball Championship.

The GABF thanked Ansa Mc Al and Digicel for footing the airline bill, saying that it was a mark of “social responsibility, caring and concern for citizens in need.

Also singled out for special mention was the staff of “Caribbean Travel” travel agency who at short notice made the necessary arrangements for the team’s return on Tuesday March 20th.

“The GABF would also like to thank Caribbean Airlines and all the individuals who offered their assistance to the team. It is indeed heartening to see this outpouring of support from so many Guyanese,” the basketball authority added.

Good Work Girls, and thank you to Digicel and Ansa Mcal. As usual that govt is never there for its citizens. They will blame it on money not being available until after the budget. Shame on you Frank

Am I to understand that our Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport has abdicated his official responsibility and displayed such disgraceful disrespect and disconnect with our Winning Female Basket Ball Team in Antigua? Minister Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, MP should now distance himself from that Ministry; in other words he should RESIGN.

Congratulations to our Winning Ladies. You have done Guyana proud. Thanks a million, too, to all the Corporate Citizens, including Caribbean Airlines for stepping up to the plate.

I hope REDJET AKA RIPOFF JET will reimburse all of their passengers their full fares. I hope they do not resume operations. Consumers have lost all trust in REDJET. I have never traveled with them and never will after this horrible incident...

Is this a caring Government. from the time it was made public the plight of the Guyanese Stars the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports should have contacted the federation and find out what can be done to help.

Exemplary corporate social responsibility. How are such corporate acts instantly rewarded?

It is heartening to know that we have businesses who are still not negligent to assisst even if the bottom-line does not reflect financial gain. Your committment to ther social fabric of this great nation is remarkable.
