Old Age pensioners on Monday at the Enmore Post Office for their monthly payout

Old age pensioners on Monday joined long lines at post offices countrywide, with mixed views about the GUY$600 increase in their monthly ‘small piece’.

Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh last week announced in the 2012 National Budget that the Old Age pension would increase from GUY$7,500 to GUY$8,100 per month.

While Singh compared the new monthly pay-out to the 2006 figure of GUY$3,500, several elderly persons lamented the paltry sum being offered.

Many of them said they would have welcomed a minimum of GUY$1,000 more while others would have liked to take home around GUY$10,000 or GUY$15,000 at the end of the month in light of the high cost of living.

In Georgetown, at the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) headquarters, several pensioners spoke with Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com)

“I think they could have done better. They could have made it ten thousand. They can afford to do that,” said Neville Adams.

Asked what the GUY$600 pension-hike meant for him, he said: ”It could buy something. You could drink a beer or two but on a larger scale, they could very well pay the ten thousand.”

Just behind Adams was standing a man, who preferred to give his name only as Patrick, was a bit more appreciative of the hike. “At least it’s an increase rather than getting nothing. You still have to praise God for it. You have to live with it but it should have been something more.”  At the same time, he observed that one plate of food costs more than GUY$600.

“Poor people work thirty and forty years and that is most embarrassing to the old people. That’s an insult,” said an elderly woman, adding that she would have been more comfortable with a pension of GUY$14,000.

Pensioner, Eudora Harris predicts that even with the additional GUY$600, the cost of living will climb but at the same time “we thank God for what we getting.”

At Enmore Village, an East Coast Demerara traditional stronghold of the governing Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP), reaction to the Old Age pension hike was also mixed.

“I’m thankful very much that we can get a little more ‘raise-of-pay’. I don’t know! What they want to do, they will do, we cant fight anyone,” said Lalita Ramchand as  she was leaving the Enmore Post Office.

Inside the Post Office yard, a feeble Neil Mojum voiced dissatisfaction with the new pension, saying “that’s not right. That can’t help us. We want more…Cost of living high. I don’t have anyone to ‘mine’ me,” he said. Among his priorities are foodstuff, telephone bill and water bill.

“The government is trying but it can’t compensate a pensioner with eight thousand dollars. You have to try and help yourself,” added Harry Paul who was chatting with Mojum.

Doodnauth Singh,75, does not remember the last day he ate chicken because it’s too expensive. He depends on the demolition of old houses to get wood to cook his meals. “That thing can’t pay light bill or buy ration…Countryman, you got to thank God, you get a kitchen garden to get lil bora and lil ochro to eat,” he adds.

Yet another pensioner lamented that the new pension would amount to less than GUY$300 per day. “Do you feel that any human being can survive on three hundred dollars per day?....they don’t have shame,” says Kenty Holder of Golden Grove.

One loaf bread costs about GUY$260 and a bottle of drink costs between GUY$120 and GUY$260 per bottle, depending on the size and brand.

Holder wants government to also consider the elderly whose children have abandoned them. “Some persons, they are so feeble. They put all their effort towards their children and the next thing the very children, who they exert all their youthful energy on, desert them. There is no one to offer them anything but an Old Age Pension. Give something reasonable!

Finance minister Dr. Ashni Singh in his budget presentation on Friday stated that despite the increase in production with the 2011 output being the highest since 2008, “output continues to lag the production trajectory anticipated by the industry’s long term business plans, and industry finances are being adversely affected.

The industry has set itself a 400,000 tonnes target to meet by 2015. The minister also announced a GUY$4B package for GuySuCo in order to ensure that the sugar industry is financially able to meet its operating and investment requirements

In 1991 Cheddie Jagan said that if he gets into power he would raise Old Age Pension to $10,000 dollars. Well Cheddie got into the reigns of power in 1992 and to this day de Old Age Pension can't reach $10,000 yet.
Ya see how dem politition does lie!! Imagine 20 years after the Cheddie Jagan promise old people still can't get $10,000 dollars. But Minister can build posh house in less than 5 years after tunning wan Minister
Dem nah care bout old people Dem care bout demselves only.

It's an insult, most pensioners can't even buy the basic foodstuff with their pension.. My niece who is 13 years old gets US $20.00 allowance per week and she is asking for an increase . These pensioners should not be forced to live such a stressful life. A 35 % increase would have been reasonable.

A word of warning for the youths ,don't make too many children, concen trate on just one or two.One person said' they invested in their kids and they gone and leave them to the mercies of the government. How sad.

A small increase, thank you. I hope the first lady Mrs Ramotar, can persuade the President to reconsider.

The Elders should not have high hopes for a better quality of life ever since President Bharrat Jagdeo went on record saying that he is fed up with the old people. He said that on September 1, 2008.

Financially it is it is very possible for the Government to grant 100% increases to old age pensioners but here's the thing about old age pension, if it's the only pension you're receiving then it's a bit like the grasshopper and the ant story. Old age pensioners are persons who have passed a minimum age (60) and are receiving a stipend from the Government. They have not contributed anything to NIS or any other pension schemes during their working years but now receive this stipend. Now there are those old age pensioners who have contributed to NIS and in addition to the old age pension they receive a second pension which is likely more than the old age pension.

Old age pension was not meant to be the sole means of support for our elderly. We had a family structure whereby the elderly would live with us and were revered. No more is that common and like the ant in the ant and the grasshopper story, persons have to invest towards their golden years. You can't depend on the Gov't for 100% sustenance.

In addition, for those who have no means of support but the old age pension, they can apply for other grants which are issued to low income individuals. Instead of griping, perhaps we should be assisting our elder in applying for these grants.

If this is the pension one gets after 30 years of service to this country. i would urge the youths with their fansy degress to migrate to greener pastures. Further, i challenge any memeber of parliament opposition and goverment sides to live on the existing pension for one month.

Something is better than Nothing, atleast the government has been increasing Old Age Pension and other financial assistance in a time when the global economy is really taking a beating.

While 600 may not be much to some, it is interesting to find out from your article that pension has more than doubled since 2006. Which leaves me to wonder what were pensioners really receiving two decades ago? I do hope that Guyana's economy continues to grow so it can support more larger increases in the future after all, the country's income must be able to sustain its social programme as we see when countries economies are affected how the vulnerable such as pensioners suffer, in some cases losing their pensions all together. From readng the article i discern that the pensioners themselves understand the reality of the situation but as everyone would naturally do, they would expect more.

Imagine the benefit that the Guyana has gained from all those pensioners that have migrated to others countries to be close to their children, that are not drawing any old age pension from Guyana.

Shame on the government of Guyana!! How come Jagdeo gets $1million on pension but other people have to live on $8,100??? His ass should live on $8,100...and Donald Ramotar when he gets out of office too. All those resources in the country and still they can't be better off than these small islands who have nothing!!!!

Quoting Robert Chand:
Well you cant say accept n bless bec GPL alone is more than that

FYI pensioners don't pay for electricity or water. Even if they live with others a certain amount is taken off for that person.

With that said I think the sum is still a joke. $2025 per week?

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE AGE-OLD HUMAN CREED OF 'LET THE HUNGRY BE FED, THE NAKED CLOTHED, THE SICK NOURISHED, THE AGED PROTECTED, AND THE INFANTS CARED FOR'? THE ELDERS ARE THE VESSELS THAT TRANSPORT MOST OF THE YET-TO-BE DECIPHERED SECRETS AND HISTORIES OF TIMES PAST. IN THE EVENT THEY ARE USED AS SACRIFICES, VAST AMOUNTS OF SPIRITUAL WEALTH AND PERTINENT INTELLIGENCE EXITS OUR GROUNDS. THAT THEY CANNOT FEED THEMSELVES IN A COUNTRY WHERE MONEY IS READILY AVAILABLE FOR LAUNDERING AND EMBEZZLEMENT AMONG AND WITHIN THE RANKS OF GOVERNMENT, IS TOTALLY EMBARRASSING. THE NETHERLANDS SHARE THE NAME OF A PLACE WITH A VILLAGE ON THE WEST COAST OF DEMERARA CALLED THE 'HAGUE'. IT IS WHERE PEOPLE ARE TRIED FOR WAR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY. SO MANY TIMES HAVE THESE LEADERS MET THE CRITERIA TO BE MARCHED STRAIGHT THERE WITHOUT A PIT/[censored] STOP. IT WAS JESUS WHO SAID THAT IF YOU DO THIS UNTO THE LEAST OF THEM , THEN YOU HAVE WREAKED THE SAME PUNISHMENT UPON HIM...AND JESUS WAS A HUMBLE MAN.

In reply to MERT.You claim that "they have not contributed to NIS or other pension schemes etc." Many persons have contributed to the NIS but do not qualify for pension from that scheme. You should investigate before flying your trap

dem a warch meh is clearly blind as they and their cohorts in the opposition would never bring themselves to say anything positive in Guyana. Someone spoke about development and GUyana's resources, i do hope they took note of evey effort by the opposition to sabotage our progress, whether its targeting all the foreign investments for constant misinformation or slow fiya, mo fiya or making the country ungovernable.Imagine if we were not affected by all that political violence from the early 90's how far more developed this country would have been and pensioners would have obviously been receiving more. So many investors were scared away by the irresponsible acts of the opposition so they could have make the country ungovernable which was the only way they saw as their best chance to get into Government. So people need to get their heads out of the sand or wherever else they have it and recgonize these realities which they find as 'Inconvenient truths'.
