Residents in areas of western Leguan were Friday battling flood waters caused by extremely high spring tide and siltation of a  koker outfall, authorities said.

Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn said equipment is being rushed to temporarily repair an old breach at Louisianameasuring about 30 feet long. Storm surges, combined with the spring tide, Thursday night resulted in severe overtopping, he said.

Benn and other local officials confirmed that a koker outfall was cleared on Thursday but again silted up overnight, preventing flood waters caused by the high tide from draining into the Essequibo River. Heavy duty machinery was again due to clear the outfall.

Residents say that some vegetable crops have been affected by the flood. At least 40 yards at Louisiana alone are under water ranging from four to 18 inches high.,

Neighbouring villages such as Success and Phoenix are also reporting effects of the flood.

Authorities hope to permanently seal the old breach once the National Budget is approved by the National Assembly in another two weeks.

Engineers hope that life would return to normal for those Leguan residents by Saturday afternoon.

Hydrometeorologists say Guyana's coast is expected to continue experiencing unusually high spring tides over the next four days.

A few years ago, I observed a Hymac on the road-side of the sea defence at Eastern Leguan, digging sand from the river side of the sea defence and loading it onto trucks. No wonder our sea and river defences are collapsing.

With sea levels expected to continue rising as an effect of global warming, it is doubtful that Leguan's current sea defenses will prevent it from being completely flooded by the Essequibo River.

Let's hope that the government uses a portion of the much-talked-about future oil windfall to build sea defenses that will protect our low-lying coast from the anticipated deluge.

And I hope that the windfall comes before the deluge does.
