Four young men were late Friday night night seriously injured when the car they were in slammed into a utility pole, splitting it into several pieces and plunging parts of West Demerara into a power outage.

The accident occurred at Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara shortly after 11 PM.

Eyewitnesses said one of the youths ran out of the badly damaged car but he was caught by public spirited citizens. Several bottles of rum and an ice pitcher were seen the car, a Toyota Alteeza. No names were immediately avaialble.

The front of the vehicle has been damaged irreparably.

The injured were due to be rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

This is the second major accident at Goed Fortuin in less than one week, the first one claiming the life of 26-year old Adam De Jesus during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The car was travelling in a southerly direction when the mishap occurred.

Thank God they didn't hit anyone! I feel sorry for the people who have to deal with no electricity. The Drunkards, however, I have Absolutely ZERO sympathy for. There should be Zero Tolerance for this stupidity. They should have been seriously injured! Yes, I've said it. Everyone is gonna say.. "Oh My God, Thank God dem Okay." but I say, You could have KILLED an innocent person. (It could have even been You, who is reading this right now, who would have been hit by these morons.) I feel No Sympathy for Drunkards, and neither should you! (yes You, the Reader of my posting). I feel strongly about this, because it seems like our Culture thinks it is okay to be a drunkard. The four of them should have all ended up with a broken leg, or arm or something. (GO AHEAD, Everyone, cuss me out for saying that!)

Police need to stop taking bribes and the government need to increase police salary so they wont be accepting bribes. They need tobe more vigilant. And the government has to have proper system in place for Guyana. Not only drunk driving but speeding and everything.

.....I Know it's easy to say : Put the offenders in jail for a few nites +heavy fines + impound the car for a month or so, BUT I know it's not that easy with all the bribes that's going on etc etc, SO therefore I say the people should start suing the blasted Gov't for not passing stiffer rules\penalties \fines\ for drunk drivers.......It will take some time\years but now is a good time to start -- just look at Trinidad, in time people will get the message....UNFORTUNATELY more lives will have to be taken before this DRUNKARDS GET IT --- But it's a start.......

Whenever I visit Guyana, I always say to myself, "it's another venue to drink alcohol". I was there 07, 08, 09, 10, & 11. Everytime, I force myself to engage in alcohol drinking exercises, just to be social. Moreso, I am always being driven around by many family and friends who will be under the influence. I know its wrong, but it seems like the way of life in G/T. More importantly, A cousin of mine said that he knows all the big police dudes, so if we get caught, he will just call the dudes and we will be released. My concern was if we happen to get involve in an accident. This point seems to be absent from my people back home. In Canada, I do not drink period, and please note I have the ability to drink around 20 beers or so, one lash, and can keep going and going.

I am disappointed that persons could have the mentality of Observer, come on whoever you are, haven't you as a youth made many mistakes? and if you're an adult now, aren't you still making mistakes? I know you are, then why would you wish that these youths had been killed? shame on you,if you were to pay for all the mistakes you made and are still making, where would you be today? ask yourself that question, then re-think about you silly comment. I thank God that nobody got killed or seriously injured, and those youths have an opportunity to correct their mistake.

no matter how much money u give the police they will still take bribes.....the least they can do is take the bribe and let the drunk drivers sleep it off in the station. i am sure that the driver of that car has a police in his pocket....thats y he drove under the influence

Fed up GT, you make a very good point my friend. Why is it that every song being made has to glorify rum drinking? Every "so called artist" pirate/ steal bollywood music, and re-sing the song with Rum in the lyrics. This is why our culture, society, people will never prosper. The people who have influence doesn't do anything to evinhance our way of life, our moral, our principles. All dey wanna do is "sing fuh de grass-roots" and go to national stadium and make nuff nuff money. Anyway, back to the story of these 4 morons. If I had a gun, I would walk into dem rumshop and start shooting! That should be the next story you hear. "Vigilanty lose in guyana killing drunkards."

Well, I agree alcohol can be a problem but we must let it cntrol us. Looking around, even some the most educated people, including doctors, consume alcohol. Also, it is found in most medicine. the trick is not how to use and don't abuse it and don't make other influence you to over consume it. Also, you have to be aware that it dull your senses. Governments make it legal by taxing it. Gov'ts should make it illegal but there would sumgulling and moonshine. So, the gov'ts should educate the citizens about the dangers of the use of it.

Nyc Observer, I agree that these youths were totally in error by drinking under the influence of alcohol, I even feel they must be disciplined, however, I cannot agree with your wish that they should've been seriously injured, how could you be so callous, do you know God? were you not a youth at some time, didn't you make many mistakes? I know you did,we all did, if we were to be punished severely, or seriously injured, because of all our mistakes back then, and even now, sit down quietly, shut your mouth and consider, what would be your condition at this moment, I know what mine would be. Come on whoever you are, you're cold-hearted. I thank God that nobody died, the innocent or the guilty. Young men learn from your mistake, don't drink and drive.

It seems bribe acceptance is now cultural within the police department and much of law enforcement and the public sector. No amount of pay increases will stop this. The government, at this point, need to enact legislation specifically geared towards members of the armed forces, customs, immigration and all public servants for that matter who take bribes, enacting extremely severe penalties for persons who are guilty. Penalties should be much stiffer for people entrusted with upholding the laws of the country. The government needs to send a clear message that they consider this a serious matter, one that threatens the national security of this country.
