Even as Guyana’s gay right organisation held the country’s first ever march- though small in number - to clamour for equal rights, plans are in train to intensify a bipartisan political lobby to scrap laws activists say are discriminatory.

The Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) on Saturday held a march of about eight persons through a section of northern Georgetown away from the city centre to highlight their demands.

Backing their calls for British colonial laws against buggery and cross-dressing to be repealed and for same-sex unions to be permitted, they marched from Parade Ground, east along Middle Street, north along Camp Street, west along Lamaha Street and south along Main Street back to their point of origin.

Saying that was a “safe route” given by the police, Simpson defended the low turn out at the march on grounds of societal stigmatization and discrimination. Rough global estimates are that about 10 percent of Guyana’s 750,000 persons are lesbians, gays and bisexuals.

“You have six people coming out for an issue which is very stigmatized like this, I think is very significant in this political context where people think that nothing they do or say will be listened to by the authorities,” he told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com ).

However, the march did not go down well with devout Pentecostal Christian, Shirley Eleanor Jordan who was passing in her car at the same time. “I’m not supporting it because I believe God’s plan for the stability of the society and the family starts with a covenant between a man and a woman,” she told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com ) moments after briefly speaking with SASOD activist, Vidyaratha Kissoon.

The march was one of a number of activities to observe May 17 as  International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO). It is coordinated by the Paris-based "IDAHO Committee," founded and presided by French academic Louis-Georges Tin. The day aims to coordinate international events to garner support for the respect of lesbians and gay rights worldwide.

Ahead of a round of state-sponsored public consultations on LGBT rights that government has publicly promised to hold before the next United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) later this year, SASOD has completed its own round of brainstorming. Simpson said the key decision emerging from that LGBT “community consultation” on April 16 has been to take advantage of the “new dispensation” in which the Executive does not enjoy majority support in the legislature.

“While the Executive branch is leading this process, the legislative branch needs to be involved because we are talking about the repeal of laws so it doesn’t make as much sense for the executive to conduct consultations on repealing laws if they don’t have the majority opposition on board and involved in the process,” he said.

SASOD says it wants an “inclusive and transparent” consultative process with clear terms of reference.

SASOD wants government to establish a consultative group with  representatives from the governing 32-seat Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPPC), the 26-seat A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) which has seven seats in the National Assembly.

The gay rights organisation plans to dispatch several pieces of evidence of discrimination to Presidential Advisor on Governance, Gail Teixeira. They include copies of affidavits in a February 2010 High Court case that challenges the constitutionality of laws against cross-dressing. The case is still pending.

Police had arrested and charged four men with wearing female attire in 2009, an act SASOD says in court documents was as irrational, discriminatory, undemocratic, contrary to the rule of law and unconstitutional.”

Under intense pressure from sections of the religious community, Guyana several years ago aborted moves to amend the constitution to provide for the respect of persons on the basis of their sexual orientation.

The hypocrisy of the people who quote Bible to be against the rights of gays and lesbians...

Yes, you hypocrites - the same laws apply to fornicators - even if they are heterosexuals! The Bible does not say homosexuality is worse that illicit heterosexuality .

If some people prefer to cross dress, whose business is it? For starters, what is man's dress and women's dress? Is it ok for women to wear pants, for example?

Those Christians who use the Bible as their guide - good for you. Let it apply to your own lives, and those of your ilk. But do understand that others are not governmed by those statutes, ok?

It is all about equal rights and Guyana is one hundred years backward; you people want to live in Canada, America and Europe and still think like cavemen and all those homophobic folks in Guyana love to enjoy his gay brothers' and sisters' success in life. Now give them their rights, after all they are humans too.

Boy - we have a lot of "closet" gays and lesbians today and what about the Bi-sexual? They Rights violated too? And whose who rape little boys? Dem got plenty questions to answer.

The funny thing is that this PPP regime - is everything for everybody once the money come - we dont see it. Dem boys teck out special company, like this one call NICIL - and put the money they get from abroad and put it there.

Guyanese politicians so stupid - they quarrel when the "horse gone, and then they try to close the Stable doors". Ramjattan making all the talk - everything he think he know he tell the nation, but I am sure he na gat all the right papers to back up the Big talk.

We gun see - talk to much. He must get all the documents - when the NICIL was set up, who are the directors and all the accounts - from day one.

They better prepare to march on the streets with the Gay and Lesbian people for the RIGHT to try these people. That was why Rohee was busy preparing the jail before the election - so they can make it comfortable for them and dem friends.

Who laugh lass, get the best laugh, so old people sa.

I wonder how the Guyana Police Force under Minister Rohee could have given permission for a march, when the matter under consideration IS STILL AGAINST THE LAW. What if a group who believes that the use of marijuana should be legalised organises a march and asks the police force for permission? Will that permission be granted, and if the answer is 'NO', why not?

I am very disappointed by the level of ignorance that still exist in Guyana and the world over, for the most part. Live and Let Live. If you feel you are straight then be so. If someone feel they are bisexual or gay then let them be. It's not your business to force your ideology on liberal thinkers as of mentioned.

I guess it will take a while for the level of ignorance that exist in the world to decline as knowledge/wisdom becomes more accessible to more people. How can people quote the bible when their is conclusive evidence that Christianity (and other religion is invented by man and is all unrealistic). How can one say that people will no longer make children if gay rights laws pass when their will always be people who would think they are straight, bi, or gay.

I believe that every single person has the potential to be Bisexual. It's just a matter of meeting that someone of the same sex or opposite sex that they find attractive.

The people showing up in that march must be some of the bravest people on earth. My heart goes out to them, fighting for human rights that way. Jugdging from the hostility shown here, no wonder that so few people showed up. And Christians should worry more about child abuse that's going on in the churches, and what about the high crime rate? It's not the gays who are known for abusing small children, it's the Catholic priests and other religios people who try to suppress sexuality, and then they need to relieve themselves at the cost of children. It's strange that people worry about peaceful gays and lesbians when the country have so many troubles that really need to be dealt with.

Gays are in every country on every continent and in every family. Guyana is the last country on the mainland of South America to be stuff in the dark ages. The momentum for gay rights is growing stronger world wide. Finally the United States is waking up to the reality that gays and lesbians are not asking to be tolerated they are demanding their right to exist freely without interference from religion and homophobic stupidity. Guyana is a dirty disgusting country. I've been there. Gay people if given their freedoms make things better. Ask America. Cities get old. Neighborhoods deteriorate. Gays move in. Property values go up. Everybody want to move back. Its gay people who should demand more out of heterosexuals. Straight people commit most murders rapes molestations burglaries assaults have children they cant support so gay tax payers have to fit the bill..the list could go on and on.
