About 22 academic and non academic staff of the University of Guyana. Wednesday afternoon marched around campus to demand restructuring of the Council and higher salaries and other benefits.

The resumption of the protest follows the non-participation of the required number of Councillors at Monday's planned start of negotiations for emoluments and other benefits.  The unions have submitted a Memorandum of Demands aimed at eventually putting their salaries on par with universities in the rest of the Caribbean

Their chants included calls for all government council members and Chancellor Professor Compton Bourne to go. The government council members are Gail Teixeira, Nirmal Rekha, Bibi Shaddick and Prem Misir.

"The council is rude and incapable of running our affairs," Chairman of the UG Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) Dr Patsy Francis told workers after the march.

UGSSA Vice Chairman, Dr Melissa Ifill said workers are demanding that the Trinidad-based Bourne resign because he has refused to engage them, even refusing to acknowledge their correspondence.

"The chancellor has not responded to our appeals, our attempts to engage him," she said. "We feel that his leadership has been weak and as a consequence we don't have confidence in him," she added.

"Who Must Go? The Council Must Go Now" "Pay The Workers Now, "Sign the World Bank Loan Now," and "Pay we more Money now" were some of the chants. Political Scientist, Freddie Kissioon, whose contract was scrapped and not offered re-employment, was among those participating in the protest.

The UGSSA and UG Workers Union (UGWU) had back in February called off a planned three-day strike after the Ministry of Labour intervened and a terms of resumption was signed.

However, Ifill said almost all of the Terms of Resumption have been breached so far, again boiling over into the recommencement of industrial unrest. She noted that the unions had submitted their Memorandum of Demands but, contrary to the Terms of Resumption agreement, no meeting had been held after more than one month had passed.

“We still allowed that to slide but even when the date for the first negotiating meeting was called , the Council members did not turn up and we felt that that was extremely disrespectful. We believe that it is not taking the issue of the workers seriously and we certainly had to take a stand, we cannot let this situation continue,” she said

One of the terms was within one month of submitting the Memorandum of Demands and one month has past.

The protest march was originally scheduled for 2 PM to coincide with a Council meeting. That event was subsequently postponed and so the protest march was brought forward to midday.

Ifill attributed the poor response to the protest to late notice to workers. The unions plan to picket the office of the Pro-Chancellor, Prem Misir later this week.

Pensioner Fred jeopardizing grievances workers might have, those trampling the streets and dont want work should be sent home, this thing seems political,.

Why when workers are are standing up and speaking out for their right in this country they are always labelled by section of the society and the powers that be. What is wrong with a retired worker or even one that was sent home standing in solidarity with those that are still on job.

UG protestors are being ignored the parliamentary opposition as government ignores UG and plays games with the opposition.

@Dougla, if you were a staff at UG, your comment would have been different. There is nothing political about this event! Over the years, all I have been hearing is the deplorable state of the University, the only one in the country mind you, but no one is coming forward to assist in uplifting the standards of the institution. Shame on this Government and some members of the private sector. Apart from the books that are usually donated to the institution, they need better buildings, furniture, laboratory and other equipment, and not outdated equipment. The government should look into granting tax concessions for businesses and other organisations that make meaningful contributions to the upliftment of the university's standards, infrastructure, human resource, the works! its time we lift Guyana higher!

This is a grave tragedy and injustice to the people who are educating our nation at the highest level. I'm not a supporter of strike action but what does one do in the face of intransigence from an uncaring government??? God help our Guyana.

My UG friends, I am not surprise about compton bourne attitude to your current distress on Campus that is the nature of the man, he only lasted two terms at Caribbean Development Bank, because he was known as Airborne just travel all the time did not work made alot of changes that the workers did not like, he and edwin carrington are two ineffective men who sadly were heading regional organisations. compton bourne is an old pyo boy from Kingston by the electricity corporation so people like them don't give a hell about anyone.

BluRay, Jay maybe does not live in Guyana anymore and maybe he/she is one who has no interest to visit Guyana again, I agree with your comments as far as I am concern UG is in a total MESS UNDER THE PPP/C the first thing they did was to change the traditional graduation date from October to November, that was the first downfall, secondly parents have to pay millions of dollars for thier children to study depending on the discipline of the programme, at the back of the campus is like a dump with old furniture the labs want new equipment, one would think that the Council members are persons who travel all over the world and see the way things are done would copy the ideas and try to bring UG to a standard, but they are just WICKED and have no intention of doing any thing. UG would be celebrating 50 years in 2013 one has to wonder what kind of celebration we will have.

The performance of Prof. Compton Bourne has been a real disappointment. His actions as Chancellor of UG is a further sign of how the Caribbean's "talented tenth" (per DuBois) continue to betray the CARICOM masses.
