AFC warns President against ignoring opposition motions on Linden electricity hike PDF  | Print |

afclogoThe Alliance For Change (AFC) on Thursday warned the President Donald Ramotar administration that ignoring an opposition motion to block an increase in electricity tariffs in Linden could lead to unrest.

AFC Chairman, Khemraj Ramjattan could not immediately say whether his party would support a motion by the opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) that aims to stop government from charging Lindeners more for electricity from July 1.

The APNU has said that it prefers to exhaust the parliamentary route, despite the fact that two weeks ago Ramotar accused the opposition of seeking to run the country by motion. He has said that he would refuse to sign opposition bills into laws unless the Executive is involved in crafting them.

For his part, Ramjattan feared that if the President and his administration fail to heed the motion on electricity tariffs in Linden, the town and the country could plunge into unrest.

“It could create a crisis in Linden, it could create demonstrations in Linden, it could create violence in the street,” he said.

The AFC Chairman accused the governing Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) of seeking to use the hike in electricity charges to foment unrest on the streets to win back the majority East Indian vote. APNU is largely supported by Guyanese of African descent.

“The government wants to take us to the edge because whenever we are taken to the edge, the PPP gets what is called a turn in their favour because of the racial voting patterns.

When you take Guyana to the edge, the forces that support them largely ethnic forces go back to home because you start having racial violence in the streets and I think this is what they are playing on,” he said.

“I think this is what they are playing on. They don’t want to listen and to compromise

Ramjattan wants the President to take into account what the majority in parliament is saying when they pass a motion and work out a compromise although he enjoys a presidential veto..

In a prepared statement, the AFC urged the Guyanese leader to “honour the wishes of Guyanese” by signing into law bills that have been approved by the majority of the people’s representatives in the 65-seat National Assembly.

“The President needs to wake up and remind himself that he has moved beyond being the leader of the PPP. He is now the leader of a free, democratic country and in this democracy it is the collective will of the people as represented in the National Assembly that will pass the laws,”  the AFC said.

The party reiterated that it would be willing to work with the government, “but it must be under the umbrella of cordiality, mutual respect and a genuine commitment to compromise in the interest of what is best for the people of this country.”

The AFC has seven seats, APNU 27 and the PPPC 32.

I don'5 support any form of demonstration or protest against the government that results in violence against innocent people or destruction of properties belonging to private citizens.

If the government offends you, go after the government. Watch how fast they will cave to pressure!

Jaatan and the AFC in panic mode fearing any snap elections will see the PPP/C winning a majority and the AFC scraping the barrel to retain may be one seat, the govt have to do what they have to do for the benefit of all Guyanese, unlike the PNC/AFC who are cutting off benefits catered for by the govt, Jattan must be reminded that this is the second time he is threatening the PPP/C, he must be reminded that the Water Cannon, rubber Bullets and the people are behind the govt.

The position of the joint opposition (JO)on the Linden tariff increase is incomprehensibl e. The community of Linden is confronting no economic hardships different to the remainder of the country. The JO seems only concerned with this community for obvious politcal reasons and is prepared to sacrifice the wider constituency. I am of the opinion that this is one issue the rest of us should picket the JO on, it should be the tariffs are eqated or the rest of us MUST pay less. Evidently the welfare of public servants, teachers, sugar workers and other working people in the country is unimportant to the APNU/AFC.

NOT sure why the JOINT OPPOSITION feels that LINDEN should pay less for electricity. This is not fair for the rest of the population. As a result of GOVERNMENT subsidy Linden utilizes far more electricity than the rest of Guyana.

Why would Ramjattan echo unrest in the country? Perhaps he is afraid of his own seat. Next election it will not be there.

Why should the rest of Guyana pay for Linden, let us know Ramjattan.

The majority of Guyanese does not support this administration, as was evident in the last elections.
Let them call snap elections.. the majority opposition just refuse to take part in any elections until the dictator's constitution is changed.
Participation is needed to make the election legitimate..

On this issue I must lend my total support to the government's position as I cannot understand why the people of Linden should be allowed to continue enjoying an almost free benefit that the rest of the country are paying their fair share of. To threaten mass demonstrations and total chaos is something that I would expect of a two year old, but not of men and women who have been entrusted with the well being of the Guyanese population. Come on guys, go after the government if you do not like their policies but not the Guyanese populace. Let saner heads prevail.

The majority did not vote for APNU or AFC either. However the PPP garnered a higher percentage of the votes hence won the largest amount of seats in the house.

In my humble opinion, I believe that a proper consultation should have been done with the grass-root people of Linden coupled with a thorough feasible study prior to the announcement of an electricity tariff increase.

The only thing that ever brings the PPP to its senses is 3000 black people demonstrating on the street, water canon or no water canon. Khemraj"s warning may yet prove prophetic.

The malicious Donald Ramotar minority PPP is bent on pushing the nation to the brink and the AFC must be applauded for it's perspective on the tariff issue facing Linden. If the racist government want to level the playing field then the subsidy to Guysuco must be withdrawn so Guysuco and the sugar workers must face the economic realities of the market forces of sugar.

Ramjattan is igniting the people of Linden to protest, indirectly he is telling them what to do, that's best way a 'professional' sees things. Why should Linden not come into the national grid? What makes them special to enjoy almost free electricity? Ramjatan is an outright disgrace and has let us down, u will see what we will do the next election, CAUSE U LET US DOWN AND MAKE US REGRET VOTING FOR U MR. RAMJATAN.

ONE LAW FOR ALL GUYANESE. NO COMMENT FROM RANJATTAN AS TO ALL THE CRIMES AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN . RAMJATTAN DOES NOT SUPPORT PPP. THE PPP SUPPORTERS WHO SWITCHED TO AFC ARE HOLDING THEIR HEAD AND CRY. NEXT ELECTION AFC WILL BECOME A FOOT NOTE.

Why isn't the ENTIRE country protesting for LOWER electricity rates? If they were able to subsidized Linden for so many years they can afford to lower the cost to an afordable rate for the ENTIRE country.

I am from Linden and when I moved to Georgetown and saw the electricity bill I was blown away. I quickly got someone to "fix" me up to ensure the bill was equivalent what I could have afforded at the time. Myself and family are still enjoying it.

Stricter the goverment, wiser the polulation...

Why is Ramjattan seeing violence at this early stage...why cant the Politicians believe that Guyanese have better thinking....!!!! The politicians are the one who instigate the violence in this country you are siting options which the people to resort too...!!!
I am surprise that Mr. Ramjattan is taking a stand to gang up with the APNU and would vote for a motion like this. Mr Ramjattan forgot the supporters put him there but is seems that he is nothing but sheep in wolf's clothing....being part & parcel of the APNU!!! We are watching clearly what is transpiring here....what makes Lindeners superior!!!!
