An AFC-commissioned cartoon which the party says depicts the assault of the editorial on young Afro-Guyanese.
The Alliance For Change (AFC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the punitive action taken against staff of the state-owned Guyana Chronicle following last week’s racially-themed editorial and is calling on President Donald Ramotar in his capacity as Information Minister to address the issue. Freelance writer Parvati Persaud-Edwards, who reportedly penned the editorial, has been fired and duty editor Rashid Osman is to be sent on leave in the wake of the June 2 editorial which sparked public outrage, Demerara Waves Online news understands. “While we commend the acts of dismissal of the writer of the offensive editorial, Ms Parvati Persaud-Edwards, and suspension of the editor, Rashid Osman, for his dereliction of duty, this has not gone far enough. The AFC demands a full retraction of the editorial by the Chronicle and an apology to all Guyanese, and in particular, to African-Guyanese. Also, in his capacity as Minister of Information, we demand a statement on the issue from President Ramotar,” executive member Gerhard Ramsaroop told reporters on Wednesday at a party news briefing. The editorial, which has since been scrubbed from the newspaper’s website, was titled “Opposition rampages to sow disunity in the country” and came as Lindeners, who have long supported the main opposition party PNCR, were protesting government’s increase of electricity tariff in that region. Among other things it stated that “Black youths are socialised by opposition leaders to think that Indians robbed them to get rich, so they automatically feel that they have to wrest by force, even murder, anything Indians have.” “Hatred of Indians is ingrained into their psyche. Many Indian persons, who grew up in the arms of black people in rural communities have today become fearful anytime a black youth gets too close to them,” it continued. According to Ramsaroop, there is a prevalence of “heinous anonymous writings, including scurrilous personal attacks on our citizens in the state media and on internet blogs” under the PPP. “This is totally unacceptable and must stop. The most shameless thing about this is that taxpayers’ money is used in this enterprise; we are paying for the fomenting of division in our own society and for attacks on ourselves. As such, there must be immediate reform in the state media apparatus along the lines of how the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) operates. We demand its immediate depolitisation and the establishment of a new board drawn from distinguished resident and non-resident Guyanese to oversee its operations,” Ramsaroop stated. He also called for the shutdown of “all hate internet blog sites, whether pro-government or opposition” with immediate effect. |

Judgement says that "Ratamarn is sowing the seeds of a sad tomorrow" be carefull Ratamar what you wish for, dont wake up the lions.
Where are these voices when Indo Guyanese are being massacred and robbed by afro Guyanese, almost everyday, of their hard earned cash and other assets. These attacks have been as prevalent in Berbice as in the greater Georgetown area and and its environs.
Parvati Persaud-Edwards is a brilliant journalist and wrote an editorial that reflects the truth. For decades upon decades indo Guyanese have often faced the brunt of attacks and massacres encouraged and sometimes supported by opposition groups. Because of this together with the dictatorship and discrimination during the PNC rule many were forced to leave their homeland.
Parvati was simply highlighting a new wave of these attacks encouraged and driven by the opposition for narrow political gains.
I call on the Guyana Chronicle to be strong, stand by their staff and re-instate Parvati Persaud Edwards.
She simply did her job and submitted it to the editor who approved it.
PS: The "AFC-commissioned" cartoon is intended to inflame the minds of black youths to go out and harm indo Guyanese.
The only way things change, its when the court become a part of the battle.
Here is where young Blacks in Guyana can make serious demands on this article written by an employed operative of this Minority Government.
This is the way some inside the PPP do see young Black. They still live with that attitude.
I can remember the days when we entertained Indian after tended to our rice farm during out of crop. Feed them and work was always available but when my mother send me to meet with them I could never go pass the gate. It was not allowed beyond the gate of many.
These traits still exist up to today, just look at the way these store owners talk to people in their stores or where they offer social services.
This is emancipation period, it time Guyanese Blacks get a grip of themselves and become self-sufficient and demand respect.
leadership starts at the top and if the A.F.C is serious, call for selective buying of Business that support this Minority Government to support the respect of Black youth in Guyana.
When will it stop, the days for hate is over and it encourages backwardness and this scourge must be remove. Let deal with it head on A.F.C. This is the reason why I am a member of the party. Dig deep and root out race hate.
Put Guyana first
Donald Ramotar, who is now the country's President, the Minister of Information and the General Secretary of the "Marxist-Leninist", PPP, has made no public statement - unreservedly condemning this racist attack on our fellow sisters and brothers.
Marxists,(Ramot ar claims to be), Muslims and Christians and all other philosophies in Guyana are totally against racism and discrimination, but yet Ramotar has kept silent about this outrageous onslaught on a significant section of our people?
Of course, all descent Guyanese in Guyana and abroad, will agree that this is outburst is "totally unacceptable and must stop", immediately.
"The most shameless thing about this is that taxpayers’ money is used in this enterprise; we are paying for the fomenting of division in our own society and for attacks on ourselves", the AFC stated at their press conference.
The Working People's Alliance, (WPA)led the attack on this vicious attempt to stir-up racial conflicts - at a time when we are building a major multiracial movement our country has not seen in modern times.
The WPA reminded the nation of its long-standing multiracial politics, led by the slain Internationally -known, working class leader,Professo r Walter Rodney. His death anniversary was observed recently all over the world and in Guyana.
The dismissal of Parvati Persaud-Edwards, the alleged author of the offensive editorial, and the suspension of the editor, Rashid Osman, for his dereliction of duty, is just a "face-saving" exercise. This is not enough. The entire entity must be re-structure the on-going democratizing process.
Like the Burnham regime, the PPP controls the State newspaper and media, using it as the propaganda arm of the party and the state - reminding us of the paramountcy of the Party-State- vehemently condemned by the Jagan PPP.
The history of the PPP rule in Guyana over the last 15 years, in particular, have done to the African Guyanese what the Dictator Burnham tried to do with the Indian Guyanese working people. The rich and educated Indians always benefited from both the PNC and the PPP regimes.
Both parties claim to be multi-racial, but have not been able to seriously cross the race barrier, as the original People's Progressive Party did in the 1950's.
Today, Guyana needs the broadest possible multiracial coalition that includes the grass root members of the PPP and its disillusioned supporters.
The emergence of a new partnership - which is led by the APNU and AFC - must prepare the process for a conference for the formation of a National Unity Government (NUG), which will resolve all the underlining problems that our people face.
This is exactly what Gerhard is advancing when he speaks of the BBC model.
In this way journalists would be professional and be guided by high professional standards and in this policy framework the emanations of Parvatie would not find their way into the people's paper.
You are as uneducated as the conme as a GUYANESE your saying the right the right to print what the want have you no integrity or an once patriotism or even some sort of common sense ? SMH its sad when thingz like this happen to a country that is multi cultured
And multi ethnic..
Lucian or Lucifier you have been totally misinformed about the operations of the the BBC , you need to do your home work before making these comment silly comments .The BBC does not function is this primitive and bias way like the chronicle newpaper in guyana. The BBC is not affililated to any political party because it is funded by the people through licencing fees. The BBC is controlled by a board of goveners who selects a head the front the
organisation on a non policital basis.Lucian with freedom comes responsibilitie s. If a BBC editor had make such comments over here he would have been sacked immediately and face criminals charges for inciting violence, and the head would have had to resign. So lucifier note, with free speech comes responsibilites . Making such a comment in England would have serious consequences and lots of heads would have be rolled.
