One of the injured persons, Allan Wade Lewis, receiving emergency medical attention.

At least three persons have been confirmed killed following clashes between members of the Guyana Police Force and Lindeners protesting an increase in electricity tariffs.

Regional Chairman Sharma Solomon told Demerara Waves Online News Wednesday night that three males have been confirmed killed with one being a handicapped child.

One of the men he identified as Guyana Defence Force officer Ron Somerset. Unconfirmed reports have placed the number of dead at five. Neither police nor hospital sources could immediately confirm the claim.

Sharma accused the police of using both live rounds and rubber pellets on the protesters and described the situation in Linden Wednesday evening as “pandemonium.”

“Dozens of persons have been injured,” he declared.

There are also reports of several buidlings on fire including the General Office which houses the offices of Linden Electricity Company CEO Horace James and where residents usually pay their electricity bills. Police said the Guyana Revenue Authority Builidng at Washer Pond Road was also set ablaze but Guyana Fire Service firefighters were prevented from from going into action by a number of protestors who threw missiles at the ranks and their vehicle.Roving groups of protestors have also destroyed a truck transporting fuel which was set afire at Wismar and damaged an excavator and have also set fires along the roadway at Half Mile and One Mile, Wismar, police added.

The police in a release Wednesday urged the residents to remain calm and stated that the Joint Services would be patrolling the area.

Around 6 PM the police resorted to firing rubber pellets at protesting Lindeners after tear gas failed to disperse a group that had occupied the Wismar-Mackenzie Bridge all of Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses said the tear gas volleys fell short of the crowd since they were fired from the vicinity of the Linden Hospital Complex and residents retaliated by pelting the police with bottles. At least six persons were seriously injured and several more received minor injuries.

News reaching DemWaves stated that protesters encircled the police on the bridge and pelted them with bottles.

The residents had used old vehicles and other debris to block the bridge, a major artery to the mining interior, since mid-morning.

The police have since restored traffic across the bridge.

Protests have stemmed from the government's introduction of higher electricity rates in the mining town which residents are contending they cannot pay at this time. Businesses in the town have shut down in sympathy with the residents call.

Mackenzie, on the eastern bank of the Demerara River, has been plunged into blackout but the reason is yet unknown.

The Linden Utility Cooperatives Society Limited (LUSCL) for most of Wednesday turned off its supply to residents to Wismar on the western side of the river as part of its protest.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds in an appeal to the residents has urged them to come forward with "earnest, realistic proposals" as an alternative to the increased tariffs introduced from July 1.

"I'm ready for formal proposals. The majority of people want to get on with their lives because we have people who want to stir up fear," he said.

And in a statement Wednesday night he said he was “filled with great disappointment and deep regret” on the blocking of the bridge.

“I regret greatly that demonstrators have succeeded in blocking the Demerara Bridge, and that a number of enterprises and persons in Linden have suspended their normal businesses and getting on with their lives. I deeply regret this setback to all the work that the Government has been doing in advocating Linden as a place in which to be, and a place in which to do business; advocating and working to realize Linden as a gateway to, and from, Region 9, and northern Brazil.”

According to the PM, all that work has now been compromised. He also condemned the electricity company for turning off the power.

“I am particularly upset that, early in the morning, LUSCSL turned off the electricity supply to the Wismar/Christianburg area and, hence, the water supply also. That was plain thuggery upon captive consumers by a utility provider, behaviour that could not be tolerated.”

There was no mention of the deaths in the Prime Minister's statement. In a subsequent programme on state TV he said the residents were being misled by bad leadership.

"The problems for Linden rest on the heads of those leaders who are leading this shutting down of Linden and the closing of the bridge ... I am encouraging everyone who has suffered losses to take the instigators to court; sue them for those losses," the Government Information Agency reported him as saying.

Opposition Leader David Granger travelled to the mining town Wednesday night and visited the injured at the hospital. Linden has been a stronghold of his party the PNCR for decades.

The PPP is not the problem in Guyana, look some where else. Nothing will come out of this. African r slaves they do not have rights and so can never be given justice, it will be business as usual in Linden they will have to pay the hike after being shot. Wait and see.

To All Guyanese: There's so much talk about Linden and people getting killed, but what i don't get is the few who are calling people to go out and support the protest!! Really Guyana?? Who in their right minds, would go out there and protest with all that's going on. And the same ones encouraging people to go out there and protest, where are they? They are just seeking to cause more harm than good. Nothing is confirmed about how the people died and if the protest is so peaceful why are buildings on fire and persons getting killed??? I'm not one to side, i just hope people would realise that this is just really too much right now, there is no such protest that is worth dying for..and if your stupid to think this is it, well i do encourage you to go lay your life down for the cause!! I just hope that the persons who lost it all, were not innocently killed, and if they are, my heart goes out to their families. And i hope that the police who killed these people were doing their jobs right and made the call correctly to take a life. If not then i hope they pay for it. But just to close things off, I think that the way the government choose to go about what they did to the people of Linden was wrong, and on what the Linden people did, i think there's always a right and a wrong way of doing things, but I'm sure its the very few bad apples that spoil the bunch (i hope). I Support you Linden!! Not for your bad apples, but for the ones who did what they had to peacefully. RIP TO THE LIVES LOST GUYANA.... Always remember we are all Guyanese and we strive for a better tomorrow....ONE PEOPLE , ONE NATION, ONE DESTINY!!!!!!!! !!!!!

My sympathy to the family of those who died. I hope good sense will prevail and the protest is brought to a stop. The protest is unjustified since there is no reason why Lindeners should be given preferential treatment. There are many poor villages in Guyana besides Lnden. Gold has become a major foreign currency earner and the blocking of the bridge is equivalent to economic sabotage. We should not let a few disgruntled person treaten the economic security of the nation. The police needs to nip this protest in e bud . They must have zero tolerance agaianst the protestors..

The police shooting of the protesters was a calculated, deliberate and callous act of aggression against the black people of Guyana. It is clear that this racist ppp government with a few booth licking ignorant nigger policemen carry out this act to silence the black people of Guyana. They have an agenda to murder and eleminate black people who resists ther tyrany and oppression. They have have already mudered hundred of black youths and our freedom fighters with impunity in the past and now they are at it again. This racist ppp government has openly declared war on the Afro Guyaness population and now we have a ligitimate right to defend ourselves and families. They can be no discussion or talk of peace the damage as already been done.We the black people of guyana from this day are in a state of war, today the racist ppp government has openly declared war upon the black people of guyana. There must be no more scope for compromise or dialogue the situation has now reached a point of no return this is war.We the black people of Guyana must now moblise our people and resources in order to counter this wickedness, injustice and oppression that is directed against our people. This blantant act of aggression against the Afro Guyanese must be be resisted by any mean. Killing of our people can and must never be accepted. This is a plain case of an eye for many eyes.We must make a stand this is an act to suppress and to eleminate and to silence us it would not work. We have a right of self defense to protect our people, afterall we did not start this the killing of our people was going on for too long. The black people of Guyana must must from this day refuse to accept this racist ppp government, since it is illigitimate government one that murders and oppresses our people. We have God on our side and God hates injustice and oppression,we has a people do not oppress other races so why does this racist ppp government show us brutality, when all we ask for is justice and equality ,enough is enough. So to all the real soldiers in guyana the black soldiers you must now prepare for war these people want to eliminate the black mpresent in guyana, and that would ever happen stand firm and be counteed my brothers and sister victor is assured , this is the simple case of good over evil. God bless you all the spirit of God is with you all remember that we are his first bornof God and as a people he loves us all knowing that Christ gave up his life for our people. Every thing has changed in our economy so instead of making an impossible move like that and not thinking about how your people will react tells us of how much our government thinks about us. We all protest when something bother us one way or the other and it is not that lindeners don't want to pay Its the way that it is being presented and shoved at us. So don't say why they paying less and we paying more for those of you who are but this is what was given to us to do and as I said before they could have been raising this for years and we wouldn't have felt it but that speaks of who we have as our leaders. I support the right to PROTEST, but it must be a peaceful protest. Having said that, i do not agree with what the lindeners are protesting about. They want an electricity cut as they have been having for years, whilst the rest of the country pay their bill? where is the fairness in that for the rest of the country?

it is the afc and apnu, and i dare say more so the afc, who incited the people and look what happened. I heard that the police was being attacked when they opened fire. I dont know whether that is correct but that is what i am hearing, if so,the police is in order! lindeners protesting peacefully? u guys know better than that!

the very bridge that is used for the all linders is now destroyed, thanks to the attitude of the "peaceful" protesters. The office of ppp is burnt. That is what the APNU and AFC wanted and that is what they got. This is politically motivated and here again innocent people are being used by crafty politicians.

I don't condone the burning of buildings but if as has been reported, this was a a result of innocent protesters both man, women and children being shot at with REAL bullets as a method of dispersion, then that is abhorrent.

I understand from this and other articles, that the reason for this hike was to bring Linden in line with the rest of Guyana, with that I agree to a degree. Electricity, gas and water suppliers can pretty much fix their rates (which are then overseen by a governing body), that's what leads to healthy competition in other parts of the world. Guyana is no different. GPL and LUSCL(?) can charge whatever they like and provide a poor service.

SAM HINDS!! I DARE YOU TO GO TO LINDEN AND EXPLAIN WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO THE RESIDENTS THERE.

YOU ARE LYING ALL OVER AND BECAUSE THE TV STATIONS ARE CONTROLLED BY THE GOVERNMENT THE MAJORITY OF GUYANA DOESN'T KNOW THE TRUTH. THEY ARE BEING FED WITH YOU LIES!!!

YOU ARE A LIAR AND WILL PAY DEARLY FOR IT. GOD IS WATCHING FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

THE KILLING OF INNOCENT PPL WAS NOT RIGHT NO MATTER HOW YOU PUT. THE INCREASE OF ELECTRICITY RATE IS NOT ONLY A LINDEN THING, IT IS WHAT THE WHOLE OF GUYANA SHOULD HAVE DONE WHEN THE PPL IN DEMERARA, BERBICE AND ESSEQUIBO HAVE TO PAY FOR LINE LOSSES BY GPL. DON'T LOOK AT IT AS THE PPL DON'T WANT TO PAY THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY IF THERE AREN'T JOBS FOR THEM, PRIOR TO ELECTION THE SAME PPP/C GOVT PROMISED JOBS FOR LINDENERS (IE THEY NOW THAT THEIR IS HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT IN LINDEN)SO HOW COME YOU NOW INCREASE ELECTRICITY RATE ON THEM AND YOU KNOW THAT THEIR IS HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT RATE. AND THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE SAYING THAT THE PEOPLE SHOULD PAY AND SHUT UP IT IS BECAUSE OF YOUR SMALL MIND THAT IS WHY YOU ARE PAYING FOR WHAT YOU DON'T CONSUME FOOLS.SO MY PPL IN LINDEN KEEP UP THE STRUGGLE BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IT IS AND MAYBE THOSE RACIST MIGHT SEE THAT THEY SHOULD JOIN YOU GUYS. MAY THE LORD JESUS OUR RISEN SAVIOUR SENT HIS ANGELS TO GUIDE AND PROTECT YOU ALL DURING THIS PERIOD

What a shame people getting killed over a demonstration and no one is openly giving any sympathy to the family of those slain. Mr. Hinds what have you done for Linden other than talk. Also why is there so much hatred for the people at Linden. In the not too distant past Linden fed power to other parts of Guyana, how fast we forget. My condolences to the family of those that were murdered.

In no civilise society would the police opt for deadly force to disburse protesters, for example ocupy wall street protesters tried to block a bridge, the police move in in large enough numbers and arested them, THE WATER CANON WHAT WAS THE REASON AGAIN THAT TAXPAYERS MONEY WAS SPENT ON ITS PURCHASE.This is unbelivable realy.

The riots in london August 2011 with over 200 mil pounds of damages to property and not one person was shot by police even though the protestors hurled bottles and other items at the police. You can read about by just googling these event.
explain about the Occupy New York, washington, La, etc.when persons blocked the streets to send a message. Again not one protestor was shot even when again persons rushed the riot squad. Again read it in the papers.
I can list many more protest in FREE countries that people protest and block roads and bridges and even attach police yet no protestors were shot at withh LIVE rounds.
So explain why protestors were shot at again?

I condemn the use of force by the Guyana Police Force, the PPP has no moral authority to rule Guyana any more, the government should resign and set up a care taker government until a new constitution if in place.

No right thinking human, more over African Guyanese can sit and feel well about what happened in Linden. I condemn this violence and I condemn the rush by African police men to shoot their own brothers and sisters.

We do not need more shedding of blood. A senior government official urgently needs to address the people of Linden.

AN SAY WAT??? Which one you know is capable of addressing the truth, and which one you THINK does not want Linden to stay on its backside. It's SPITE, pure an simple, for the Linden people remaining faithful to the opposition. Remember that Janet Jagan comment years ago ... the one about bringing Linden to its knees???

Janet gone but her programs to suffocate the community live on!

And all of you who believe that Lindeners should not be protesting over higher electricity rates, P-L-E-A-A-A-S-E- go back and read your history. Find out that Linden's power was always provided from the excess generated by the bauxite company, how Sam cannibalized the old steam plant for GPL and left Linden with no standby. FIND OUT AS WELL THAT LINDEN HAS NEVER RECEIVED POWER FROM THE GPL GRID. Their rates therefore, cannot be tied to GPL.

This is so ridiculous. The government is actually DEPENDING on the ignorance of the masses to sell this sorry piece of S***T economics. But is unrest they want, let's see what they get!

If linden ppl used to pay 3000 a month and now they got to pay like 4500, I don't see the big fuss when my bill is near 8500 and I got a fridge, tv and washing machine. Linden ppl need to grow up

why all this crap about "black police" shooting "black" people...so what...as a professional, the colour of your skin doesn't matter when you have a job to perform. if this is how it should be, then we should have hospitals, schools, police stations, fire stations, eating places, roads, rivers, etc, for the different races of our beautiful country. This thing makes me sick to the stomach. Where is the sop for the police? They were supposed to approach the thing with crowd control and rubber bullets not life rounds> They should have taken the water cannon that we bought for the elections and never used. Bullets will not solve teh problems of linden, jobs and equal opportunity is the answer. Give them jobs so that they can pay.

Judas Rasta, Judgemenent is the celestial truth that liveth in every loving and decent human being , those that have respect for life and love for all humanity, with the possible exception of you.It has no country, it has no race ,it has no colour,it has no creed, it has no guns, it fights no wars, its only possession is the truth.

Yes,I do live in Guyana and every where else in the world maybe not your world. Those of you who believes injustice and freedom would know where I dwell.

Judas Rasta, you said that I dont live in guyana, I think that you are the one who dont live there because it clear to see that the truth does not dwell in you.

Christ said "I come to show all mankind the truth and the light , what is wrong and what is right. So tell me Judas rasta, where do you live and why are you hiding in dark and afraid to be in the light. You are a Gignal and an imposter thats why. Judas rasta, purity and perge yourself so that truth maybe known by you.
