Nigel Hughes

Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes on Monday called for the opposition to bring a no confidence motion against Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee following the police killing of three Lindeners protesting an electricity tariff increase last week.

Hughes, an executive member of the Alliance For Change, was speaking with reporters following a meeting at the Office of the President which also included Region 10 officials and an APNU representative.

“My position on Mr. Rohee is that the combined opposition should before the end of the week move a motion of no confidence in the Minister of Home Affairs and that is my personal position. Before the end of this week the combined opposition should demonstrate to this nation that Mr. Rohee does not enjoy the confidence of the majority of this nation in discharging his functions as Home Affairs Minister,” Hughes stated.

APNU executive Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, who represented the coalition at the meeting, said that was something the APNU would have no difficulty with supporting.

Efforts to contact AFC Chairman Khemraj Ramjattan on Hughes call were not immediately successful.

Rohee stated on national television Sunday night that he had a “clear conscience” on the matter since he had given no order that led to the shooting and in response to calls for his resignation he echoed the words of President Donald Ramotar.

The president on Friday at a news briefing dismissed a question on whether the minister should be removed.

“My Minister of Home Affairs was not on the ground and he was not directing anything, I don’t agree with their calls,” Ramotar said.

Both the APNU and AFC have called for Rohee’s resignation.

The home ministry had issued a statement on Thursday, the day after the shooting, extricating itself from the fallout.

According to the ministry, the events which took place at the McKenzie-Wismar Bridge were “strictly a police operation with no direct or indirect involvement of the Ministry of Home Affairs.”

That man Roe-hee has no shame. The damn shooting happened under his watch, just like the shooting of Mr. Felix, Chief-of-Staff Collins and others in Georgetown. ROE-HEE is ultimately responsible. HE MUST GO AND SLEEP ELSEWHERE WITH HIS CONSCIENCE,NOT IN THE PEOPLE'S HOME AFFAIRS MINISTRY..If he's not responsible, the he must admit incompetence.....and demit office. Any decent minister would in a truly democratic society.

Fire the damn minister, he is no blasted good and responsible for the murder of the three. Him and Donald Ramotar have blood on their hands, dripping from their mouth and on their clothes.

Mr Rohee admitted that one day prior to the confrontation he had discussion with both the Commissioner (ag) and the divisional head of the Linden Police .......am I missing something here?

What was discussed?
did you remind them not to repeat of the mistakes made last December?.....or you advised them to stop the protesters at all costs.

or you just met them to wish them," best wishes?" ...... big nincompoop!!

This is where Ramutar is showing how stupid he and all the PPP is. How can he stand by all these useless people when they are doing so badly as a party and his ass is on the line. It's like they are begging to be kicked out.

The politicians and so called activists who led the poor innocent Lindeners to their death should all be charged. Lindeners are been manipulated for political gains. When Green led the protestors on a rampage in 1992, benshcop led 2 persons to their death in 2003 they should have been charged. All the leaders who over the past 20 years have been sending the people to slaughter so they can gain political points should be charged. Linden protest is a political motivated movement that some fanatics hope will turn into a race war. They did the same with buxton. Careful Lindeners careful !

A no-confidence motion may be symbolic but it becomes part of Rghee's political resume as a square peg in a round hole. Just like his boss, Donald Ramotar. The stupidity of Ramotar's statement that Rohee was not on the ground in Linden or did not give the order to shoot, hence Rohee should not be removed, confirms why Ramotar is a square peg in a round hole.

In a protest demonstration, the police commissioner must assure his boss about the complete readiness of the police to conduct crowd control techniques according to humane and international standards. The use of live ammunition in the absence of live ammunition attacks, shows the police commissioner, the commander on the ground and the Home Affairs Minister all failed down the chain of command. Ramotar's failure is that he has been a failure since at GuySuCo and as head of the PPP!

Stupidity reigns in the Government. All Guyanese should be afraid of these people. Home Affairs Minister incriminated himself and by extension the government that is standing behind him. Common sense should have warned them that Rohee is a curse with his 'Kick ass' talk. Since then they should have got rid of him. He admitted to meeting with the commissioner, deputy and divisional commander on how to deal with a protest that they gave permission for. He claims that he repeatedly made it clear that live rounds not be used( huw did that even get on the table to have come up repeatedly). The result of his high level meeting is that three people are dead and a number of people nursing gunshot wounds. To top it off, the minister says that there is no immediate reason for charges or his resignation. Something is wrong here Guyana. Today it is Linden where next will Ramotar release this overwhelming stupidity to 'kick ass'?

Some people are calling The Honourable Minister Rohee a liar based on the recent statements he made about his involvement in the killings in Linden. How dare them! The Honourable Minister would not lie. Such an accusation is preposterous. The Honourable Minister cannot lie. His statements were naturally incoherent and self incriminating due to his acute lack of common sense and an overwhelming sense of stupidity that has always characterized him. He is definitety not a liar

Rohee has a problem. Like a lot of his comrades in the PPP he would be unable to get a job. That's why he would bully Ramotar to stay as Minister. Where else can he get a salary, perks, security, car,dr iver, house, free utilities and the most lucrative- runnings with the chinese including the man from Celina.Remember they dont even have Metrepole fu he ketch he hand.

There are million reasons why a no confidence motion should be passed against ROHEE that have absolutely nothing to do with the killing, even though that is one of the reasons.

Rohee is responsible for the Police Force and he is responsibility for safety and security of the people in this country. He is also ultimately responsible for managing the traffic situation and ensuring law and order on the roads of Guyana.

These are some of the craziness that Rohee is condoning:

Rise and sustenance of the mad minibus culture
Lack of road marking and signs on the roads
the "non-significance" of the pedestrian crossing
lack of proper warning signs, markings, reflectors at road/bridge construction sites

and many many more craziness that this chap condone...

Rohee just like Ramotar is a waste of time governing this country.

I think Mr. Rohee inadvertently let the cat out of the bag when he said I quote " we discussed this issue and I was assured that no live ammunition will be used" Now my question to Mr. Rohee is why were they even having a discussion on live ammunition in the first place if there was no intent to harm, protests are usually dealt with by the use of tear smoke, batons, and rubber pellets?

Nigel the problem is one of culture, Guyana never had, I say never had a culture of accountability, from Burnham to present day. Guyana and Caribbean politicians have become monarchs.

I am not hopeful for anything coming out of this, I cannot be. I have seen too many injustices in Guyana that nothing was ever done about, too many. It is a sad and unfortunate country, Guyana is.

My major concern is the lack of compassion by African people for their own. It is so easy for African police men to shoot without thought their own flesh and blood on behalf of an Indo Guyanese government. This shows me we r an enslaved people, mentally and physically.

Someone said they were being professional, why weren't they professional in dealing with the Tain uprising by East Indian protesters? How come afterwards the PPP chased all the policemen there plus dispatched senior government and PPP big wigs to the site?

U know why? Because East Indian people are compassionate on their own, they r not willing to gun down their kit and kin. That's what is lacking among African people. Change will never come to Guyana through democracy, it is too divided and too corrupt.

Would someone please help me out here, why the opposition in this country is so weak and their memory so short lived especially the APNU, just listen to the President 'my minister was not on the ground blah blah.....', when the APNU selected Granger as its candidate hol-lad if ya hear the loud crying how he got BLOOD on his hands and he this and he that, now we all know that Mr. Granger was not there when the Ballot box were stolen nor when the PPP supporter were killed, but for the PPP he was responsible, they even campaigned on this issue, wrote articles and had several discussions this matter and Granger was just another Senior Officer in the army at that time, but here we have ROHEE as the Minister of Home Affairs and in charge of the Police Force but yet still he is not responsible and of course BLOOD is not on his hands. Mr. President no disrespect but GIVE ME A FLIPPING BREAK.

I remember when three Berbicians were murdered because the tried to prevent Granger's army from stealing their ballots. Did anybody call for the resignation for Norman Mc Clean? How about the police chief? Also, did u remember Rodney - did forbes attacked him and later gave a speech on '...if you see Rodney run...' Did anybody ask linden to resign? What happened to hoyte - during 'slow fire, more fire'. Several Indian stores were looted - indian women molested - just as they were in burnham's town - linden. Who resigned? We should find out who instigated the people to loot and burn and blocked transportation to anf from Linden. They are responsible the deaths - they should resign and also prosecuted. Finally, what makes the people of linden more special than the rest of the country that they should pay less - if Ramotar compromise, the rest of the country should demant the same rate like linden - just to be fair.
