digiceldeanDigicel on Thursday declared that it is willing and ready to fight any legal action mounted by or on behalf of GT&T and will aggressively defend its legal right to provide low cost international calls to the people of Guyana.

Since Justice Rishi Persaud's ruling, the Office of the President said that unilateral amendments and alteration to existing telecommunication rates based on the judge's ruling is inconsistent with Justice Persaud’s ruling since that ruling was stayed on an appeal by GT&T.

The telecommunications provider began offering the lowest ever international rates seen in Guyana this week following a decision of the High Court on Friday last which declared GT&T’s Monopoly to be unlawful and invalid.

Chief Executive Officer, Gregory Dean was quoted in a company statement as saying that, “Digicel has long promised the people of Guyana that it would provide hugely reduced rates for international calling and the company is determined to do so.”

“As champion of the consumer, we immediately made good on that commitment following the Court’s decision.  We are ready and willing to compete with GT&T and challenge them to take us on where it matters – in the market. Is GT&T ready and/or willing?” Dean asked.

Digicel said it has written to the Court Services of Guyana stating it is ready and available at short notice to appear before the Courts to defend any efforts which may be made to prevent Digicel’s ability to provide low cost international calls to the people of Guyana.  The company fully expects that it will be notified of any legal action that may be mounted to resurrect the GT&T monopoly and be given a proper opportunity to fight for the rights of the Guyanese consumer in any legal action that may be pursued.

“Guyanese have been ripped off for too long and we will not sit idly by and allow a return to the bad old days of monopoly prices. We are thrilled with the incredible response we have received from the public and sincerely thank all those who have expressed their support and encouragement.  Digicel wishes to assure all Guyanese that it will not give up this battle for lower rates as well as better and more widely available services,” Dean commented.

If GTT is going to go to court and prevent Digicel from providing these lower rates they are going to get a backlash that will sting and hurt the company's image for a long long time.

Digicel vs GT&T. This is something I have followed closely from the start. While lower international rates are welcomed, we must also consider that GT&T is not just mobile, but also landline. Around the world, maintaining landline service is very costly and uses far more resources to maintain than mobile network. A few people can manage a mobile network, but it takes hundreds to manage landline. GT&T is like Digicel and GPL combined!

Lower international rates equals lower revenue. GT&T pays taxes to the government while Digicel does not. Are we willing to give up landline service and DSL? Can we just live with mobile service? Sometimes, more investment follows more profit. It is true GT&T has a long way to go, but the law must be upheld or else the glue that holds the society together loosens and lawlessness reigns.

It is about time that GT&T stop ripping off poor people in gt. For years now they sucking we. Years ago the company was charging us so much that they put the blame on AT&T and send one of their top guns to Guyana and we were told a diffrent story by the AT&T rep. GT&T is like this corrupt PPP administration that GT people have to deal with every day, NUFF/PLENTY LIES AND RIP OFF.

Gt&t needs to wake up. Time to open the market. Time for change. If they really care for the people lower your rates and compete.

The deathknell of GT&T< unless it seriously goes on a PR compaign in order to explain away its monopoly prices after 23 years of astronomical profits.

What goes for the goose must go for gander. Digicel did not follow protocol, permis sion needs to be sought from the PUC. They never consulted with the correct authority. All the big talking from Digicel yet they have to connect through GT&T for international calls. What a useless company!

Way to go Mr. Deane. Don't be intimidated by the "wind bags" at OP and the "cry babies" at GT&T. This is one fight I don't think they really want. I can assure you the Guyanese consumers, who will benefit tremendously from the historically lower rates, will be beyind Digicel.

From a customer point a view its good to go for the cheapest, but the question we have to ask ourselves as Guyanese. Is Digicel a local company? GT&T is our very own, even though the treated us badly in the past the company still belongs to us. However, at the end of the day the people know what struggle they are going through & which Phone Company works better for their financial plan ok. All I have to say its abt time Guyanese wise up & take a stand!
