Police and soldiers are expected to continue their operation overnight, despite calls by the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) for them to retreat. A senior Joint Services official, however, cautioned civilians against traversing the road until all of the obstacles are removed overnight and police and soldiers take up positions. “There is no release for traffic as yet. We have cleared the road and we are just monitoring the situation for the next six to ten hours or so (as of 7:30 PM Sunday). “We are not sure if there will be any retaliatory efforts tonight so we don’t want to have regular public passing through and they are caught in any retaliation,” the senior military officer told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) The official confirmed that information is circulating about plans to ditch several sections of earthen roads deeper past Major roads and bridges in Mackenzie east of the Demerara River have been already cleared but some residents complain that vehicles traversing some areas are being stoned if protesters believe they are working. Earlier Sunday, the security forces fired pellets and teargas to disperse crowds of persons who had been resisting road clearing efforts. Three civilians were injured by the pellets and taken by the Joint Services to a nearby hospital for treatment. A number of residents lobbed Molotov Cocktails and tossed back tear smoke canisters at the security forces. A vehicle being used to collect roadway obstructions was damaged by one of the firebombs and the pants of Police Inspector Alves caught afire. He was not injured. Earlier Sunday, residents caught two persons they believed were responsible for burning down the The security guard reported that some time after 3 AM Sunday, three men entered the compound, carted off computers and later set the building on fire. Meanwhile, the PNCR called for the immediate de-escalation of tension in the Linden Area and the halt to all operations. "The PNCR condemns the Joint Services operations today, Sunday 12th August that has resulted in the shooting of several civilians who were peacefully demonstrating. The Party notes with alarm the militarization of the crisis which has only served to increase tensions in the area," the party said. The PNCR pledged to continue supporting the legitimate struggle Lindeners for human rights and economic justice. The origin of the unrest dates back to four months ago when government announced an increase in electricity rates from July 1. Things turned for the worse on July 18 when three men were killed and several others injured during clashes between police and protesters. Though agreement was reached to suspend the increase in electricity rates and review the sector in Linden by a bipartisan committee, tension again boiled over last Friday when police fired teargas to disperse arsonists from the Wismar Mackenzie Bridge. Public buildings housing the offices of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Institute of Distance and Continuing Education, Linden Electricity Company Incorporated and the Linden Care Foundation were burnt down. Early Saturday morning the Wismar-based branch of the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) was destroyed by fire. |

The President and Prime Minister MUST PUBLICLY ANNOUNCE ON NATION WIDE T.V. THAT THEY WILL COMPLY WITH MAJORITY RULE IN PARLIAMENT.
I am not denying that there are not a lot of problems in the regions that need addressing but so is the entire country and the world. The people give you their votes so you have access to the legal systems and mechanism in place to address these problems. Neither side of the political divided is using these system and mechanism fully. The finance minister resubmit bill for money for NCN, GPL OP etc some passed some did not, not wise, have some all or none clause in it. Tie in some money for the development of Linden such as youth development, agr iculture small business etc.and bind them together with all or none clauses so that all pass or none pass.
Take the people off the streets, take the fight to boardroom of the regions of the political parties, to the chamber of parliament and its different committee sleep and drink less use your brain and pen more get your ideas into bills and motions get them pass and benefit all, if you need development but if you need the Government out that a different issue, i cannot deal with that now may be I help when I think you can manage the country. sorry PNCR. Clear the streets commander with out favor or ill will.
Who's interest does it serve to burn down Government buildings?
Come on, fight a clean fight and do not loose your self respect.
However ,what they do not tell is that region 10 is an extremly depraved community we it comes to media and information. Most people in the other regions reli on TV for news and entertainment.Thats primarily one appliance with a wide varity of channels.
In region 10 however to staying informed require two additional appliances . Lindeners, because of the lack of access to the variety of TV and radio CHANNELS still heavily really on Radios and VIDEO and DVD RECORDERS. Three appliances to do the job of one in other regions.
SO ,even though government have a legitimate arguement , so does the residence of Region 10.
Government must allow the people of REGION 10 AND LINDEN FULL ACCESS TO THE T V AND I T just like the other regions.
citizens must abide with the rule of law
and condem the few who are causing havoc
in Linden

Enter the PPP twenty years ago: they did almost nothing because of the policy of appeasement.
Now the government wants to increase the rate a bit to bring it (not equal to, but) in keeping with what people pay - for argument sake. and the blacks do not like it: seems they should be living off the rest of the populace (primarily Indians).
I say cut off the electricity completely.

I say, A Moore: Looking at TV or VCR is a non-issue. The region is "extremly depraved because the inhabitants are "extremly depraved". Get up your ass and work for a living - not the government job you obviously do.
And again, how is TV and VCR important in this issue?
