Security forces seize Wismar roads from protesters; PNCR condemns operations PDF  | Print |

wismar_teargasDespite a day of resistance by residents, security forces Sunday night said they have cleared 80 percent of the major road artery in Wismar leading to the interior.

Police and soldiers are expected to continue their operation overnight, despite calls by the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) for them to retreat.

A senior Joint Services official, however, cautioned civilians against traversing the road until all of the obstacles are removed overnight and police and soldiers take up positions.

“There is no release for traffic as yet. We have cleared the road and we are just monitoring the situation for the next six to ten hours or so (as of 7:30 PM Sunday).

“We are not sure if there will be any retaliatory efforts tonight so we don’t want to have regular public passing through and they are caught in any retaliation,”  the senior military officer told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com)

The official confirmed that information is circulating about plans to ditch several sections of earthen roads deeper past Wismar.

Major roads and bridges in Mackenzie east of the Demerara River have been already cleared but some residents complain that vehicles traversing some areas are being stoned if protesters believe they are working.

Earlier Sunday, the security forces fired pellets and teargas to disperse crowds of persons who had been resisting road clearing efforts. Three civilians were injured by the pellets and taken by the Joint Services to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A number of residents lobbed Molotov Cocktails and tossed back tear smoke canisters at the security forces. A vehicle being used to collect roadway obstructions was damaged by one of the firebombs and the pants of Police Inspector Alves caught afire. He was not injured.

Earlier Sunday, residents caught two persons they believed were responsible for burning down the Wismar Primary School at One Mile.

The security guard reported that some time after 3 AM Sunday, three men entered the compound, carted off computers and later set the building on fire.

Meanwhile, the PNCR called for the immediate de-escalation of tension in the Linden Area and the halt to all operations.

"The PNCR condemns the Joint Services operations today, Sunday 12th August that has resulted in the shooting of several civilians who were peacefully demonstrating. The Party notes with alarm the militarization of the crisis which has only served to increase tensions in the area," the party said.

The PNCR pledged to continue supporting the legitimate struggle Lindeners for human rights and economic justice.

The origin of the unrest dates back to four months ago when government announced an increase in electricity rates from July 1.

Things turned for the worse on July 18 when three men were killed and several others injured during clashes between police and protesters.

Though agreement was reached to suspend the increase in electricity rates and review the sector in Linden by a bipartisan committee, tension again boiled over last Friday when police fired teargas to disperse arsonists from the Wismar Mackenzie Bridge.

Public buildings housing the offices of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Institute of Distance and Continuing Education, Linden Electricity Company Incorporated and the Linden Care Foundation were burnt down.

Early Saturday morning the Wismar-based branch of the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) was destroyed by fire.

Is the PNCR is telling the lindeners they are right to burn buildings and block roads? It seem as though the PNCR is in a ship sailing far away from Guyana and don't know what really is the situation

THERE'S only one solution to this CRISIS.

The President and Prime Minister MUST PUBLICLY ANNOUNCE ON NATION WIDE T.V. THAT THEY WILL COMPLY WITH MAJORITY RULE IN PARLIAMENT.

If the latter part of this heading is true well this is truly disgusting...extremely disgusting.I lay blame on the government where it belongs by their NOT being tactful in methodology in the introduction of the increased tariffs but for the opposition to condemn the security force's control of the roadways after all that has happened in Linden then am convinced they're not serious about Lindeners. All they're interested in is to score as much political points from this entire doom Linden is found in.Am not as upset as i am disappointed as a Guyanese. This is really my first blog here but it has come with the compulsion to respond to meaningless political leadership and total disregard for a speedy resolution of this nonsense that has gripped my country.I am really dissapointed..Shucks man...Guyana i pray for you..We live in trying times

I support the joint forces efforts to re-open the thoroughfare but if they start shooting at protesters they had better be prepared for what could happen next. Tear gas and rubber bullets are enough, but if shotguns are pellets are used then it is fair game on both sides. Let's not hear any complaints if the people shoot back as they are not the first ones to use guns.

To the PNCR,1. You do not have any legal authority under the laws of Guyana to call off any military operation or to direct the security forces and should desist from doing so. 2. You have rid your self of any moral authority,or humane authority to do so also by having a group of your members peddling a lie that they represent the region 10 administration and creating a moral, human, economical and social crisis that directly affect regions7,8 9 and 10 and indirectly the entire Country. Let your member and Chairman of region 10 Mr Soloman make public the proceedings of the regional administration where it was discussed and agree to that the region will take protest action, and that such protest action will block and if need be destroy the roads and bridges that provide ingress and egress to other parts of the region and to other regions thereby denying them access to basic necessity. In the absence of these minutes why should there not be a called for Mr Soloman to be remove for abusing the office of Regional Chairman to push his personal and party agenda.
I am not denying that there are not a lot of problems in the regions that need addressing but so is the entire country and the world. The people give you their votes so you have access to the legal systems and mechanism in place to address these problems. Neither side of the political divided is using these system and mechanism fully. The finance minister resubmit bill for money for NCN, GPL OP etc some passed some did not, not wise, have some all or none clause in it. Tie in some money for the development of Linden such as youth development, agr iculture small business etc.and bind them together with all or none clauses so that all pass or none pass.
Take the people off the streets, take the fight to boardroom of the regions of the political parties, to the chamber of parliament and its different committee sleep and drink less use your brain and pen more get your ideas into bills and motions get them pass and benefit all, if you need development but if you need the Government out that a different issue, i cannot deal with that now may be I help when I think you can manage the country. sorry PNCR. Clear the streets commander with out favor or ill will.

We should place the PNC/R against the court, here the joint operation is trying to clear the roadways to allow traffic and business commencement in and out of the interior, and the PNC/R is asking for a halt... it appears as if they are enjoying the crippling of investments, and businesses, and further destruction of the country's economy. The people of Linden need to wake up and smell the coffee brewing, PNC/R has absolutely nothing to offer your community, and by destroying the schools, and both public & private assets, you are crippling Linden further. Imagine 800 primary children will be affected come September, the children are our future, not Granger, Solomon, Norton, and the bunch of opportunist!!! Let us work together for a better Guyana, remember our motto.. "One People, One Nation, One Destiny"

Since the begining of the year government has been trying to prove to the entire country why region 10 should pay the same electric rates as the rest of Guyana. They point to figures that show that region 10 consumes more KWs than other parts of the country. And claim that they waste energy and that they do not conserve.

However ,what they do not tell is that region 10 is an extremly depraved community we it comes to media and information. Most people in the other regions reli on TV for news and entertainment.Thats primarily one appliance with a wide varity of channels.

In region 10 however to staying informed require two additional appliances . Lindeners, because of the lack of access to the variety of TV and radio CHANNELS still heavily really on Radios and VIDEO and DVD RECORDERS. Three appliances to do the job of one in other regions.

SO ,even though government have a legitimate arguement , so does the residence of Region 10.

Government must allow the people of REGION 10 AND LINDEN FULL ACCESS TO THE T V AND I T just like the other regions.

Such peaceful and orderly protesters stoning and attacking ordinary commuters. Does the PNC/R have no shame?..the entire world is watching these atrocities being carried out by these peaceful protesters. The linden unrest continues with more wanton damage and destruction to public and private properties.

This ain't no peaceful protest or demonstration anymore..this is total lawlessness...instead of the PNC calling on the joint services to cease it's operation they should call on their supporters/protesters to desist from any confrontation with the joint services....let the joint services do their job!

The guy as already confessed to police & soldiers that he has been paid $200,000 by ppl from to burn all buildings that was build under the Burnham administration. This Indian guy came from Berbice & was living between lindeners who hadn't suspect a thing until the guard talked. so why is everyone still ridiculing the protestors for the act that was orchestrated by the government themselves. The protestors caught the guy (whom had already moved his family out of Linden to perpetrate his criminal acts)hand him over to the police & still that's not enough to convince anyone that the government played their game smartly to use violence unnecessarily. Since the Linden ppl don't have a voice (1 TV & radio Station) i bet u will not heard of this arsonist soon because he will be protected for his good deeds to them. The guy also confessed that he was to burn the Christianburg primary school & the Wismar Multilateral school last nite (Sunday) but he get caught.

The corrupt evil PPP/c minority government used chemical weapons of mass destruction on it own citizens. There are only two other regime who committed this bastardly act on its citizens. It was the Italians in the horn of Africa and Saddam Hussein in iraq. This is a violation of the Geneva convention i.e. military use of CS gas for law enforcement and civil authority use of the same gas in law enforcement when a political issue is at the core of civill unrest. This regime has violated the type and quantity rule also. Here we now have crimes against humanity, a breech of Geneva convention use to resolve a political issue. Go figure where Guyana is at this moment with criminal at the helm of the ship of state. International intervention is not a required to bring that failed state back on course.

The PNC, in thirty years of power, was supplying free electricity to Linden because they are primarily blacks.

Enter the PPP twenty years ago: they did almost nothing because of the policy of appeasement.

Now the government wants to increase the rate a bit to bring it (not equal to, but) in keeping with what people pay - for argument sake. and the blacks do not like it: seems they should be living off the rest of the populace (primarily Indians).

I say cut off the electricity completely.

I say, A Moore: Looking at TV or VCR is a non-issue. The region is "extremly depraved because the inhabitants are "extremly depraved". Get up your ass and work for a living - not the government job you obviously do.

And again, how is TV and VCR important in this issue?
