A man shot by the police at the weekend has died in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital where he had been receiving treatment for several gunshot wounds.

Shane Hinds, 27, of Middle Road La Penitence died in the early hours of Wednesday Demerara Waves Online News learnt.

Hinds was shot by plainclothes police ranks Friday night on Thomas Street, Cummingsburg around 7.50PM after he and another man reportedly attempted to rob the wife of a businessman who operates in the area. Hinds was the pillion rider on a motorcycle the police said the men were using to follow the woman’s car.

"The police challenged the two men whereupon the driver opened fire with a small arm on the police who returned fire, hitting the pillion rider who has been identified as Shane Hinds, 27 years, of Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown. As a result the motor cycle fell but the driver managed to escape," the police said in a subsequent statement.

Hospital sources say a handgun was found in the pants of the then critically wounded man and handed over to the police. Police said that weapon was a Rossi .38 revolver. It contained four matching rounds. A Walther .32 pistol with five rounds and a spent shell were recovered at the scene by the police.

According to hospital sources, Hinds was shot several times with wounds to the chest, abdomen and arms.

A woman who lives in the area, Yonette Cummings, who was outside at the time was wounded in the leg in what believed to be a ricochet of one of the bullets.

A police source told DemWaves that a patrol had seen the men acting suspiciously and decided to follow them which subsequently led to the fateful event.

Excellent work by the cops. We need more action like this to remove these worthless loosers from society. The judicial system does not work over there so this sort of swift justice is good. Would not be surprised to hear his family saying he was a good boy and was innocent and killed by the police.

What the hell is the matter with the police? are they not being trained to shout without killing. How about shooting out the tyre of the motor cycle. What is the problem with due process and bringing a suspect to face legal justice. The police cannot be judge and executioner if they desire to ensure social order in Guyana. Their actions speak volumes about their respect and trust in the legal and lawful systems of which they are apart. I am truly disgusted!!

At the rate of the shooting to kill young men in Guyana, we would soon be short of men. God help us.

Due process would lead to a magistrate releasing these thugs on a measly $10,000 bail and they are out on the street robbing, and killing tax pay and innocent members of society. Spear me the pious judicial balony. He deserve what he got.

Of. Course you would say something as stupid as above. You are a terror loving person. This thug who is lazy to put in a days hard work choose the easy way out and the size of the punishment accorded to him was just. as I said above the judicial system is a waste and he received swift justice.

Another police execution folks! The man was a 'suspect'. The police said the man was a pillion but the rider shot at them. Who would believe these lying policemen? The rider shooting and the pillion just liming at his back? Then the police have the face to tell the public that this man who did not shoot at them had a gun in his crutch and didn't use it in such a tight situation. LIES! LIES! LIES! The police had to be the ones who placed that gun in the man's crutch before he was taken to hospital. Stone killers we have for policemen. May God help them -from the top to bottom.

G/T that is one side of the story that young man was shot by police, but what was the motives behind that to use Force, it Must Have to be a Reason of High Tensions or Risks. What the Oppositions will do call for International Investigations , this is a Deliberate Acts of Betrayals, The PNC creates these Actions on its own People.Who they want to Blame but Themselves.

It seems that the public is divided. Some say their glad these bandits were killed then some curse the police for killing them. The police force is going through a real rough time now. And to you Dawne did u really think over that comment. Shoot out the tyre of the car and endanger other persons on the road or damage persons property.

If you had read carefully it would be obvious that he 'was suspected' he did not commit a crime. By your own argument it is okay for all to kill anyone presumed or suspected of doing harm. GOOD LUCK GUYANA

The fact that your grammar is so poor lends suspicion to your capacity for good reasoning.

I did carefully think on my comment. The article claimed that he was supposedly trailing a car. What was the proximity between the car and the assumed 'trailers'. The fact that the police shot to kill with all of the possible implications for a serious accident, by the rider of the cycle losing control, says to me that the conditions could have allowed for the the shooting out of the tire. We cannot and should not condone irresponsibilit y by the police. They should function as our guide to law and order and not lawlessness.

I agree with you...save the devils who will in turn bring forth more devils then Guyana would need a new name to include devils. What type of a person are you? I know it's not good to kill but there is no other method here.Quoting Golden Girl:

I think you ought to be a policeman in Guyana then you would write sensibly. They are humans after all trying to do a job. They have to safe guard their lives as well as the life of others. Too many innocent people lose their lives at the hands of bad guys in Guyana. When police do something it's a problem...when they don't do anything it's a problem. So wise guy you might be fitting for the job. Quoting Robespiere:
