freddie_kissoonVIENNA, Aug 17, 2012 – A well-known Guyanese newspaper columnist and human-rights activist was assaulted late Wednesday night after speaking at a public vigil near the country’s parliament building in Georgetown, the latest incident in what he believes to be a government-sponsored campaign to silence him.

Freddie Kissoon, who writes for the independent Kaieteur News, told the International Press Institute (IPI) that an unknown man “showered him with blows” as the journalist attempted to enter his vehicle. After fellow activists responded to Kissoon’s cries for help, the man fled in a black SUV that Kissoon said had been seen “circling” the vigil.

Wednesday’s event was held in support of residents protesting against an increase in electricity rates in Linden, Guyana’s second-largest city, where three civilians were killed last month by government security forces. Kissoon has written critically of the official response to the incident, authoring a recent piece in which he echoed suggestions that the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) was conspiring to exacerbate the country’s racial divisions. (Race is a constant theme in Guyanese politics, brought sharply back into focus by tension between the Indo-Guyanese supported PPP and the largely Afro-Guyanese population of Linden.)

Kissoon, who abruptly lost his position as lecturer at the state-run University of Guyana earlier this year, told IPI he believed the mastermind of Wednesday’s attack was “someone high up in the government obsessed with his [Kissoon's] politics”. In a column published just last Sunday, the journalist called himself “the second most molested victim of state oppression in post-independent Guyana” and wondered aloud whether an attempt on his life was imminent. He also wrote that his wife had recently been “hounded” out of her job at a government investment agency and that his daughter had been the victim of malicious blog postings.

Bert Wilkinson, executive member of the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) added that the threat of a government plot against Kissoon was “very real”. Wilkinson pointed to allegations that a disturbing 2010 incident in which a bucket of human waste was thrown in Kissoon’s face had been hatched inside the Guyanese president’s office.

The government fiercely denied involvement in that attack, noting in a statement that despite what it viewed as “serious misrepresentations” and “distortions” in Kissoon’s columns, it “respect[ed] the rights of journalists to freely express their views and [stood] firm in defence of that right”, according to Stabroek News.

Howver, Kissoon is also the defendant in an ongoing libel suit brought by former Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo, who claimed Kissoon had insinuated that he and the PPP government were racist in one of his columns. Wilkinson told IPI that evidence released during the trial has further vexed the PPP, which lost its working parliamentary majority in last November’s elections. The case will resume in court on September 7; Kissoon says he is confident in the strength of his evidence.

IPI Deputy Director Anthony Mills said: “We are very concerned about this week’s attack on Freddie Kissoon and we urge the Guyanese government to open an immediate investigation and to bring those responsible to justice. Furthermore, officials must ensure that what appears to be a campaign of harassment against Mr. Kissoon and his family is stopped. The right to engage in critical journalism is vital to any democracy and must be respected.”

Mills added that IPI was also urging the loosening of restrictions on private media in the country, calling the government’s radio and television monopoly in the Linden area “a significant obstacle to the free flow of information”.

For his part, Kissoon, who on Thursday was recovering from the attack, was determined to continue both his writing and his activism. While he contended that the government had overestimated the level of his influence, he nevertheless added pointedly: “I will continue to do what I’m doing … until I die.”

I must confess - I am not a Freddy K fan. I sometimes get lost in his ramblings. However, these persistent attack on Freddie and on Freedom Of Speech is beyond troubling and must not be condoned. To silence Freddie is a vile attempt to silence the voice of people. These ongoing attacks is evidence that he is ruffling a few big feathers. Keep doing what you are doing Sir - you surely have some folks in high places running scared!

Does the IPI also concern itself about journalistic integrity? If so it should peruse the "works" of Freddie Kissoon who fabricates mischievous stories and when rebutted does not retract. It's very very concidental that this "attack" comes at a time when there seems to be a deliberate ploy by the Opposition and various fringe groups to destabilize the Government. Something sure smells in Vienna.

Freddie molesters are the real extremeist. Persons who are not matured and cannot accept constructive critism or otherwise. They are going to the extreme to get at freddie. The govt touted that extremist were responsibe for the linden protest. Who is responsible for the attack on freddie. For me the exremists are

The Indo- Guyanese and the Afro- Guyanese is what you people determine Guyanese to be. They are all Guyanese in their eyes. Only the racists’ elements see them as different races.
There is no tension between the 2 races in Linden as perpetuated by your postings.
The IPI (the International Press Institute) is blaming the PPP/C for the slapping of Freddie. Kissoon is a nobody who wants to be the topic of discussions to get attention. President Ramotar does not see him as anything.
The IPI is putting their support on an idiot who is suicidal. “I will continue to do what I’m doing—until I die.” That means nothing palpable. The IPI would be responsible for Freddie’s demise and the world press would have to be accountable for Kissoon’s unproven writings over the past decade for he was calling for help. I’m going to die and you haven’t made an attempt to save me. It’s on record that Freddie was asking for help.
This poor soul, who cannot lecture anymore, because of his incompetence’s as determined by his peers, would rather die than live in poverty. The AFC cannot bring you out of the ditch

I can tell you I totally disdain the trash that Kissoon writes, it's divisive, sows discord and incites contempt and violence BUT I cannot condone these kinds of physical attacks, this is downright wrong.

The pen is mightier than the sword. The penned word will never diminish in its strength. We are seeing the true test of the "return to democracy" which anniversary is imminent. We are distantly removed from the democratic reality - nepotism, xenophobia, race baiting, race banishment, racial triumphalism, separatist politics, political victimization, political violence etc. are the order of the day in Guyana. A failing if not an already failed state.

On behalf of Guyanese everywhere, "I am Freddie Kissoon and I denounce the corrupt, lawless, vindictive and autocratic PPP and its regime!"

How ironic that the black SUV that circled the meeting where Freddie spoke and into which the assailant fled after the attack, bore the license plate number PPP 1395, which just so happens to belong to former senior police officer, Steve Merai, who said the plates were his, but they belonged to a car he owns and not an SUV.

Like the vehicle type is what makes the world of difference!

Is Merai not related to Ramotar?

The IPI should tell places like IRAN about democracy. What Freddie must understand is that he is only popular with persons who are struggling with the same obsession as him. There are persons with no affiliation to any political party, waiting to 'clap hand' on that boy.Freddie is so much a kickster that he would say things like 'he fought against de KABAKA' when in fact he used to be hiding behind Karen skirt.

I sometimes wonder if this is the Guyana we want our children to know. All these haters from up high to way down low. I don't always see Freddy's way as right, but he has a point of view as we all have! Why, and it pellucid, the workings of this government, is speaking out against corruption and injustice such a bad thing. Can you remember what happened to the Bacchus brothers when one of them exposed the inner workings of the government? We indeed have a dangerous, unethical, hypocritical, power-obsess and devious government! The world knows this, and the only change that can be brought to our country is a massive movement of its people! ...enough is enough!

WOW Freddie Kissoon must be an important problem man not to be involved in scuffles or being robbed once in a while while offspring to the problem is uglier than APNU politics of crass rude people who sheeple drinking koolaid from Mark Benschop and Granger. What stupid people to not believe that Freddie Kissoon orchestrated this "assault" at the same moment Mark Benschop released Part 1 of his movie spoofing Hotel Guyana 2012.

We are all Freddie Kissoon today. The animosity directed against him by the Government has a lot to do with the fact that he is Indian, but refuse to allow hi views and opinions to be shaped by that fact.

Guyana has gone several leagues backward intellectually because of the kind of leadership over the past two decades. It is the equivalent to turning the running of a 500 calibre business over to a group of people whose only experience in running something was in running donkey and dray carts.

The international press has finally taken note of the persecution of those who do not walk the line. The next step is to encourage them to turn their investigative lens on Guyana, and expose the virulent racist and corrupt pattern of Governance in Guyana

I like many others may not like all that Freddie writes, but he has a right, journalist or not, as a citizen that's his God given right to speak/write as he sees things across the globe. truth be told, many of the Social thinkers of yore and our age, many governments and security chiefs and highly paid Advisors and a long long list of so-called High-end demigods are constantly wrong in their out-pourings, are criticized, sometimes, for them, but they continue nonetheless. Our daily reports though are rare on reporting violence (physically assaults) against them. Is Freddie a different kettle of fish?

While I do not condone attacks to the free press I am wondering if Freddie did not set this up himself to get some attention especially after not making any impact on Linden.
Any coincidence that it happened so soon after he wrote an article about in his columns.
Noticed how the attacker conveniently "escaped" even though pursued by so called "help" . Got the picture???

I guest if normal people get robbed at Stabroek Market those victims should go public and blame PPP/C and Ramotar, Jagdeo,PPP/C, Coolies, and more wild accusations that these APNU/PNC/AFC members do best.
Freddie Kissoon might blame PPP/C when he has constipation.

This is no laughing matter. Freddie Kissoon loses his credibility by blindly casting blame on his opponents without any shred of evidence.

The license plate that Frederick Kissoon testified. How true was his testimony?
The PPP 1935 can mistakenly be another number, or Freddie Kissoon is wicked enough to know that Merai owns a car with that registration, but Freddie was ignorant as hell to call up that licence registration on a "brand new black SUV".

Freddie Kissoon is obviously seeking the limelight and his 15 minutes of fame.

If anyone wanted to "get rid of him" as Freddie Kissoon wrote in his article, why would the people who are after him throw a few punches at his face?

The most probable explanation is that Freddie Kissoon or his friends planned out this "assault" and Freddie Kissoon was willing to get a few abrasions and bruises to blame the PPP/C administration.

Freddie Kissoon's and his friends in the APNU and AFC modus operandi is similar to the types of extremism that terrorists and suicide bombers in the Middle East and Asia engage in to terrorize the population, except that Freddie Kissoon wouldn't perform such extremism, but to a lesser extent he would be willing to get a few punches to complete his mission in creating instability in Guyana.

I expect that the GPF investigate this "assault" and prove whether Freddie Kissoon was robbed at random, has enemies or whether he orchestrated this attack on himself to gain public attention.

I am forwarding this letter to the independent dailies for their approval.

Regards and sincere,
Dave Nauth.

No Emile; Police Director Mr. Steve Merai is not related to President Ramotar. Steve is actually from Rose Hall Town in Corentyne, Berbice. I met Steve in 2011 when he was the head of Police Services and Law enforcement in Berbice. I was in Guyana to deliver 200,000 books and computers to schools in Region 6; that was our starting point for many of our Alumni were from CHS-JCCSS. We covered most of the areas from Saparuta-Orealla to Fyrish and have plans to cover the remaining areas to Abary. Our third and fourth shipments will be delivered to Region 2 and Essequibo and the interior and then Demerara and other areas.
Steve and I who is a graduate of CHS were discussing the planning of a get-together at the school for ex-teachers and students at his office in New Amsterdam and asked Steve what was required and for him to provide security. Steve’s father, Mr. Merai was the head master of St. Francis Xavier Roman School when I was there. I also know his mom and his brothers. I think he has 1 sister. If you know him and see what he looks like and speak with him, then you wouldn’t have suggested that he would have collaborated on an incident like beating up a political activist; re: Freddie Kissoon. I cannot condone such atrocity and I’m sure Steve does too. Check him out; which I’m sure you can and tell I said for you to contact him.

Freddie Kissoon is victimized by the Revenue Authority in Guyana, he is victimized by GUYANA POWER AND LIGHT,by most supporters of the present regime; it is a systematic attack on this scholar who is denied a job in his homeland and his family is pressured and victimized. This is no way to treat people of different views.

Freddie Kissoon and Fineman are similar in mentality. They fabricate things and when they don't get it their way they create havoc for the Indians.
Freddie Kissoon was busy laughing in his mansion when he received news about the Lusignan Massacre of 2008.
GRA has a TRIPS system so Freddie TIN number showed he didn't submit returns the computer does not tell lies.
APNU and AFC supporters are brainwashed just as what Jim Jones did in 1978. AFC and APNU is the front person and the supporters are the remaining segments.
