school_1Dozens of Lindeners turned out Sunday morning to start clearing the site of the burnt out One Mile Primary School at Wismar, Linden, a week after the facility was razed by fire suspected to be the work of arsonists.

Demerara Waves Online News was told that more than 40 persons were onsite at 10AM and the numbers continue to grow.

Lindeners have vowed that they will rebuild the school themselves and have started receiving financial and other assistance even as the government has committed towards having the school rebuilt.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand told DemWaves on Sunday that her ministry wants to have the school back up as soon as possible. When asked if they were prepared to work with Lindeners on this task she stated that she believed it was something on which they should be united.

“We are always happy to work with communities and indeed believe that it is only with the input of communities that we can get the best buildings and other infrastructure built.  It would hardly be sensible or beneficial to the relevant children to quibble about who does what. We, Lindeners and government, must, do what is in the best interest of the children who are currently affected,” Manickchand stated.

She added that through the regional education officers they have proposed a plan catering for the placement of all the children but were going to consult with the parents of the children on Monday to ensure they have the best possible plan.school_2

“Thereafter, there is going to be a flurry of activity focused on implementing whatever we decide on Tuesday. This would include the procurement of a large number of pieces of furniture, equipment, blackboards, screens etcetera that were all destroyed in the fire.

Our priority right now is to find accommodation for all the 846 children so that they may begin school on the 3rd September like every other Guyanese child and not in any way be disadvantaged,” Manickchand said.

Monday’s meeting is scheduled for 11AM at the Wismar Hill Primary School.

The One Mile Primary School was torched in the early hours of last Sunday in what was the latest of a series of fires that struck Linden during the one-month protest over the government’s move to increase electricity rates and the subsequent killing of three protesters.

Protesters have been adamant in stating that they did not set the fire and were instrumental in helping the police capture a suspect. However, the individual has since been released with the police stating that there was insufficient evidence to charge the man.

this is a wonderful new start for Linden and region 10. Much respect and credit to all the residents of that region .Especiall those martyrs who paid the ultimate price and must never be forgoten. Also much love and respect to the leaders MR SOLOMON AND MS KISSSOON . No one can question your love, devotion and commetment to your region.

As a guyanese who has always loved Linden, I feel that this is a transformative time for Guyana. And that linden must lead the way. Non only should this primary school be rebuilt .But it should be 'state of the art ' with modern designes and facilities for the arts ,sciences and sports. If this require that school be relocated to a larger plot of land to accomodate the up grades then the council and govt/min of education should convene ASAP.

More over the new development plan for the region should include a package for the development of sports. Land should be appropeated for Linden to have Guyana's first football stadum. And it would be right if Kuru Kuru College become home to that regions first artificial athletic track.

Mr Solomon and the leaders of region 10 must remember that you 'STRIKE WHEN THE IORN IS HOT'.After years of neglect Linden has much catching-up to do. The future is now.
college must also

Gov't will rebuild?? Gov't doesn't produce anything. Gov't doesn't earn money. They only know how to spend. It's the people of Guyana whose money has to go to build that school back.

I am happy that the Lindeners are taking responsibility for rebuilding the school. While I am happy that government is willing to collaborate with the community to rebuild the school, I am to upset that our tax dollars will have to be diverted from other areas to facilitate this exercise. I believe that those who were encouraging Lindeners to 'protest peacefully', like the lawyers and so-called social and political activist should be the ones to pay for the rebuilding school.

I am truly impressed with the Lindeners. I would be happy if the Lindeners also rebuild other buildings that were destroyed during the protest with their own resources. This would show the Lindeners are interested in 'building' rather than 'destroying'.

Why??? let the people of Linden, by means of self help cooperation rebuild their school, they stood by and allow that to happen, while they guard the bridge and stopped commerce. If they contribute in some means, they will then value and protect their assets.

The selective outrage here is simply amazing.
Govt undertakes to rebuild the burned school and many are offended: NICIL rips off the country of BILLIONS and the silence of many is deafening.

Who said crime does not pay. Protesters will destroy and the weak government will build it back. This destruction should not have been allowed to escalate in the first place and now we know what will be the outcome if these opposition communities does not get what they want and Pa Pa Government better make sure their demands for freeness are met in the future or Georgetown will be up in smoke again and I wonder if the government will rebuild it for the other section of the community who predominantly have their businesses there.

Most probably the govt was involved in the burning of the school that's why they run in now to offer assistance to rebuild in order to take shame and guilt out of their eyes. The fact that the police are so passive on this issue concerning the arrested arsonists speaks volumes. How disgusting if they really did burn the school, but then again that is the kind of thing the boys at freedom house would come up with quite gleefully.

I am wondering how come the leaders of the protest allows the go ahead of the cleaning of the building before the fire service or the investigation of the Government to investigate on or what it the real caused of the fire, to my knowledge the place should be ductaped and evidence of what is the real caused of the fire should be checked out first.I hope ppl are thinking.

Lindeners have always been about building and developing their community. That's what started the protest in the first place; a call for development, building a strong economy that could sustain the community. The proposed hike in electricity rates was seen as an effort to sink the community into the ground and make it very impoverish. The heart of the people is with their community.

Lindeners should be ashamed of themselves to destroy their children's school, it shows how much they value education and seems they have learned one skill and that is the art of destruction. Do they really need schools?

It is good to see that the Government is "rebuilding the school".

It is true that this government will use this as a political platform so as to win the hearts of the people and in so doing their eyes will be blinded from seeing all of the corruption that is still taking place in Georgetown by their friends and brown nosers.

This Government said that it will stamp down on corruption, They setup a net to catch the big fish and all like now not one of the big fish get catch.

I hear that there have two nets. One with fine holes to catch the small man and the other one with two big big holes to let the big fish get away.
