caricomflagThe 15-nation Caribbean Community (Caricom) on Monday announced that three distinguished legal luminaries have been nominated to serve on a Commission of Inquiry into the July 18 disturbances in Linden that left three people dead.

Those recommended include Former National Security Minister, Senior Counsel K.D. Knight; former Chief Justice of Jamaica, Lensley Wolfe and former independent senator in Trinidad and Tobago, Senior Counsel Dana Seetahal.

The Caricom Secretariat said the three jurists were recommended by Caricom Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin La Rocque after consultations.

The smaller opposition Alliance For Change (AFC) had been pressing for a full-fledged international commission of inquiry while the larger A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) agreed with government that there should be foreign input, preferably from the Caribbean

The three Lindeners were killed during clashes between police and protesters who had been demanding that government withdraw plans to increase the cost of electricity to consumers there by reducing the state subsidy.

The opposition and government are yet to agree to all of the terms of reference to the Commission of Inquiry.

Following is the full text of the statement:

STATEMENT BY THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY SECRETARIAT  ON THE RECOMMENDATION OF COMMISSIONERS RE LINDEN INQUIRY

Following the unfortunate incidents surrounding the protests at Linden on 18 July 2012 which led to the deaths of three (3) citizens of Guyana, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has been engaged with the Government of Guyana on a continuous basis.

At the request of the Government of Guyana, the Community has recommended three distinguished CARICOM Nationals to serve on a Commission of Inquiry which is expected to enquire into and report on matters related to the events of that day. The three CARICOM nationals are: Mr Justice Lensley Wolfe O.J., Mr KD Knight S.C and Ms. Dana Seetahal S.C.

Mr Justice Wolfe is a distinguished jurist and former Chief Justice of Jamaica.  He is currently Chairman of the Public Service Commission of Jamaica and also served as chairman of the Police Public Complaints Authority of Jamaica.  Mr Knight, a practising attorney, has been a Senior Counsel since 1995 and has had a distinguished career in politics and law in Jamaica. He held positions in the cabinet of Jamaica including the portfolios of National Security and Foreign Affairs.  Ms Seetahal, also a practising attorney, has been a Senior Counsel since 2006 and is a former Independent Senator in the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament and a former lecturer at the Hugh Wooding Law School in that country.

Great Selection. I don't think thint these honorable gentlemen will compromise the truth. President Ramotar must act on the findings of these honorable gentlemen. Jesus reiterated "you shall know the truth and the truth will set you free." It's time the world have knowledge of the truth and act so that Guyanese could be set free. If President Ramotar does not act on these findings then President Ramotar will be perceived as a Piranha/Dictator among his peers. I am sure International Pressure will make him bend and do the right thing. I call on ALL GUYANESE WHO ARE LIVING OVERSEAS, especially Guyanese who are living in the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom TO WRITE THEIR REPRESENTATIVES after the enquiry - Congressmen/women or Parliamentarian s, to take necessary actions so that Retributive justice could be served. John Stuart Mill states
"As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other."

Another loss to AFC; these guys and gals don’t know that they are not desirable around anymore. Their short stint is over and they cannot see it.
They walked out of the talks, when the 3 parties were discussing the consignments of the commission of inquiry. Mr. Granger and the PPP/C continued without them and now the CARICOM nominated the jurists for the CARIBBEAN content rather than the international body that the AFC insisted on. That was what APNU and the PPP/C wanted in the first place.
The AFC don’t know where they stand and keeps flip- flopping on all issues for the last 8 months that they are in parliament; from the beginning, it can be seen that they aren’t a viable force and is only there to be used by APNU—and why not! Moses was not favourable for APNU as the speaker; “ Moses departure last year from the PPP/C , with which he had associated for some 50 years”, was the reason Moses was not the speaker today, but at the same time, AFC position was that speaker Trotman was a recent PNCR executive member and yet they used their 1 vote superiority to elect Trotman (AFC). At the beginning, they were known to be ones that can be manipulated and can accept losing without any shame and are continuing losing.
Ms. Catherine Hughes, Nigel, Gerhard, Moses, Dr. Roopnarine, Ramjattan, and the other “pin” heads should throw in the towels now; for you don’t want to be embarrassed further by the people doing it for you.

I have my differences with K.D. Knight, he and the rest does not and have no clue of Guyana Politics.

This whole event must be address by people who have an understanding of Guyana Politics, not just the West Minister System.

Dear Editor
I wrote a comment on Monday August 20, on the above issue which was not inflammatory, yet it was not published. I was under the impression that Demerara Waves was very independent. However, the action conducted by Demerara waves to deprive every Guyanese the opportunity to read non-inflammatory comments related to the actions of the current dictatorship of PPP/C Government government is reckless, oppressive, inappropiate, disgusting and irresponsible. Perhaps, Guyanese need a new medium to express their non-inflammatory comments. Regardless of his or her political affiliation, the editor of Demerara Waves has an obligation to publish non-incitable responses. Please let me know why my response was not publish. Failure to hear from you will be perceived as disrespectful and irresponsible.

Cassavajoe, my friend, the commission of inquiry is not a history or a political entity; it is a judicial inquest that would make its findings according to the laws of the land and Justice Knight does not have to know Guyana’s politics. Actually, he can better serve for not knowing anything of Guyana; then and only then would be a judgement of total impartiality will be solidified.
