Suriname's Foreign Minister, Winston Lackin.

Suriname’s Foreign Minister, Winston Lackin is due here Tuesday for wide ranging talks with his Guyanese counterpart, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett.

The discussions would be held at Grand Coastal Hotel.

“The Ministers are expected to review the progress made following the meeting of Their Excellencies the Presidents of Guyana and Suriname in February this year and to discuss related issues on the bilateral agenda,” Guyana’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Suriname has been lobbying Guyana to regularise the Skeldon end of the back track route across the Corentyne River which is used by hundreds of persons each day.But Guyana maintains that the legal port of entry and exit is Moleson Creek via the ferry service.

Lackin’s visit comes several weeks after Suriname announced that it would be cracking down on illegal fishing in its waters. Guyanese fishermen in Surinamese waters including the Corentyne River run the risk of having their boats and catches seized if the vessels are not licensed in the former Dutch colony.

During Bouterse’s visit here, the two leaders had agreed to take steps to tackle cross-border crime and bridge the Corentyne River. They had also agreed to ask the Inter American Development Bank whether it was interested in financing the bridge.

Also discussed then was joint exploration and exploitation of natural resources and share knowledge, expertise and information about oil exploration and production.

Since Bouterse came to power in July 2010, Suriname has toned down its public posture about the decades old border dispute over the New River Triangle which is under Guyana's control.
