Three Guyanese police charged with taking bribe in drugs, gun, ammo matter PDF  | Print |

Three Guyanese policemen were Monday granted a total of GUY$50,000 in connection with allegedly obtaining a bribe not to prosecute a man for alleged illegal possession of drugs and a firearm.

Facing a joint charge of corrupt transaction by agent of the Guyana government are Colin Mc Intosh of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, Glendon Sergeant of Lamaha Springs, and Damion Bynoe of Garnett Street, Campbelville.

The man, Raphael De Souza, who also offered the bribe was charged with engaging in a corrupt transaction.

The court was told that on July 12, the three policemen on D’urban Street, Lodge, being agents of the Guyana government, collected GUY$360,000 from De Souza as an inducement or reward for not going ahead with prosecuting the civilian for allegedly being in possession of illicit drugs, a firearm and ammunition.

City Magistrate, Faith Mc Gusty granted each of the policemen GUY$50,000 bail and ordered them to return to court on October 8.

De Souza was also granted GUY$50,000 bail for allegedly engaging in a corrupt transaction by offering the policemen the cash, knowing them to be servants of the Guyana government.

The prosecution did not object to bail.

The cops’ defence lawyer, Patrice Henry, in requesting bail, said the trio was charged departmentally and prosecuting them would taint the image of the Guyana Police Force.

De Souza is represented by attorney James Bond

Jail these criminals who wear the uniforms of law enforcement officers, while breaking the same laws themselves and aiding and abetting civilians to do the same, these criminals in the Police Force are constantly involved in bribery, jail them and kick them out of the Force, they are wolves in sheep clothing.

$50,000 bail isn't enough. They shouldn't have even been placed on bail.

Why are these 'policemen' still wearing a uniform. It only makes clear the level of corruption accepted in the GPF

Police corruption is a troubling problem in Guyana. I'd assume that most of these incidents involving bribery go unreported, and are never uncovered, because of fear and also distrust in the judicial system system

There you go again. Government trusted servant, yea, This is what you called service to the people. What about the traffic agents? They are setting their total per day. Only in Guyana. And you know what? Blame the Government yoo.

They need real penalty for their dirty job. Fired and jail them. The police force is corrupt. They call themselves law enfor cers and they are the ones breaking the law from inseption. How can real crimes be solve when they are the biggest crimminals. The entire police force needs to revamp with well trained personnels. Goverment you need to pay your servants better than what they are earning so that they are not tempted with bribery.

Corruption, corr uption, corrupti on,that's all you hear about in Guyana today, from the top to the bottom, however, when it's being practiced by the police it's even worse, where are the law-keepers then? I am a proud overseas based Guyanese and on two separate occasions, once on my way down from the Airport and the other while travelling up to the Airport, on both occasions the police stoppesd the vehicles and demanded bribes from the drivers, fellow Guyanese if you know you're guilty of a vehicle offence, let the police charge you and pay your fine, and if you're innocent still don't give them any bribe, let them charge you, and go plead your case, don't aid and abet these corrupt Police men in their criminal activity. I served in the GDF from 1967-1987,and had much dealings with the Police as we often had Joint Service Exercises, Soldiers and Police were never paid very much at that time, but there was honesty and dedication to duty in the Police Force, this is a shameful situation, that should be dealt with expediently.
