Nurses picket the GPHC

Nurses of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) have gone on a “go slow” and picketed the institution to protest the dismissal and suspension of a number of their colleagues.

About a dozen placard-bearing nurses took to New Market Street opposite the Accident and Emergency Unit entrance to protest the dismissal of two of their colleagues and the suspension of another for three weeks in connection with the disappearance of a quantity of morphine from the A&E.

According to the nurses’ representative on the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) Kemton Alexander, the sanctioned nurses were not afforded due process.

“We are protesting here because they hadn’t a fair hearing, the administration did not give them a fair hearing as to why they were dismissed and we are protesting against it and we are demanding that they be reinstated,” Alexander stated.

When asked why they believed their colleagues had not received a fair hearing the union representative responded that the nurses did not get a chance to give their side of the story. Additionally, Alexander said the incident would have been first offences for the nurses whose service ranged between two and four years.

Alexander said that the hospital management had been written since the beginning of the issue on their concerns but to date there has been no interaction between the union and the hospital administration as is normally the case with such matters.

“There was talk about an investigation being done but after that we didn’t hear anything; I was called yesterday and told that these nurses that are involved that they were dismissed and one was suspended.”

Alexander said that they started a hospital-wide go slow which would continue on Thursday. Some of the placards borne by the nurses read “We demand better conditions,” “Cleanse the top first,” and We are fed up with the injustice.”

When Demerara Waves Online News checked at the institution for an official response it was learnt that Chief Executive Officer Michael Khan was on leave while acting CEO Dr. Sheik Amir had left for the day.

Efforts to get the personnel manager for an assessment of the impact of the go slow were also unsuccessful.

When the OLPF office lost scores of laptops, did OP fire and suspend OLPF employees? What was the result of the polygraph testing of those OLPF employees?

When will the Jagdeo cabal under polygraph testing? Or is there need for a special non-combustible machine to be built to handle the volcanic changes in their bodies with each question about taxpayers' monies and assets?

Come on Protestors, you can't punish the sick and suffering Patients for the apparent injustice committed by the Adminstration, a go-slow is not the right form of protest in this situation, you may be justified in your anger, but find some other form of protest, show some love and care for your sick and suffering Country-men and women.

Fire ALL of them! Every last one no exceptions. They think they are indispensable and we can't do without them and their sour faces. Hire Filipinos or some other hard-working group. Rather than picketing, these miscreants should spend time counseling their errant co-workers on how to be more professional with patients. When I read of some of the experiences of the poor maternal patients recently, my blood boiled. Fire them! Let them see who will give them jobs with their rude, unmannerly selves.

As a Director who has a Master in Science(MSN)in Nursing Administration, I believe the Nursing Administration wants to prove a point to the Union. The Nursing Administration ought to investigate this issue thoroughly and revise the Nursing policies to ensure that this issue does not recur.
Disciplinary action in this case should be progressive, Where is the Chief Nursing Officer(CNO) or Matron? The press should seek its answers from the CNO or Matron not the CEO. Physicians should be Medical Directors not CEOs. CEOs are administrators who know how to run a hospital.

With the reputation of this hospital as it is, I hail the curbing of all suspected criminal activity. I pray that this purging continues until we get a chance to see less incompetence on all levels.

It’s funny how there nurses and medical staff stand up for these petty issues but no one say nothing when these so call medical professionals attached to the GPHC cause the deaths of innocent new born babies and to add the insults and embarrassing words that a patient has to hear from these nurses before getting help, as far as I see it these PIGS should be discipline and to call some of them a PIG is an understatement too. Why are you asking for better working conditions? You people are working in a start of the art environment but its just that these PIG are like a bad carpenter who just blame his tools, the go to some beginners nursing course and think they got it all and when reality hit them the act like they do that why I had to slap up one of them when she decide to raise her voice to me.
