GT&T's acting Chief Financial Officer Sonita Jagan briefs the media on the company's 2013 plans as acting CEO Joe Singh and Marketing Manager Fay Wharton look on.

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) has announced that it will be offering blanket Wi-Fi coverage at the University of Guyana at a subsidised cost.

This was revealed by acting Chief Financial Officer Sonita Jagan at the company’s annual media brunch on Thursday.

“We’re hoping that this service will come in with the opening of the new university term on the 28 January. We’ve been working on it for the last few months and we’re actually hoping to roll out a high speed data Wi-Fi system over the entire UG campus (Turkeyen). It will probably extend to the borders of UG as well so we’re hoping that Cyril Potter (College of Education) will also be covered,” Jagan said.

“We will subsidise it to the extent that we’ll charge probably around $100 an hour so it will be very affordable for students with the ability to have access to good download speeds and upload speeds wherever they are on campus.”

Jagan added that the service will be extended next to the Guyana National Stadium and then to the university’s Tain campus in Berbice. The company already sponsors the university’s IT laboratory.

“We’re going to look to see what other sites, a possibility may be the Stabroek Market area we’re not sure; it comes down to looking at where you can securely put the nodes that are necessary to put something like that in place … and also getting reliable power supply.”

According to Jagan, they are looking to have all three sites up within the first quarter of the year and she added that an engineer working with the company providing the equipment is already on the ground doing surveys.

Meanwhile, the official also announced that GT&T was ready to roll out DSL internet service for subscribers from Mahaica, East Coast Demerara to Skeldon, East Berbice.

“What we did in the last few months is made the entire corridor from Mahaica going all the way to Skeldon … now ready for the data Emagine service so we will now be going on a blitz to offer all the households the new DSL high speed service.”

Jagan noted that Moleson Creek will not be included in this phase.

A desperate move by GT&T. UG and the stadium will no longer require the services of GT&T with the government fibre cable soon to be operational. Passing of the telecom bill will also see more competition in internet market and bring choice to Guyana. GT&T has raped Guyanese pockets for too long!!!

Which student is able to pay $100 per hour?

The money that you have collected by raping the consumers of Guyana for years can allow you to offer this service FREE.

There is free hot spot in a one mile radius all around the U.W.I in Barbados for FREE!!! 24 X 7

Come on GY&T $100 an hour? This is ridiculous, they continue to rape us, almost anywhere you go in the world now you get free reliable internet service in public places. As close as Suriname, Barbados and Trinidad you get free internet in Malls , Airports etc. Even UWI in Jamaica you get free internet. Get you act together GT&T. Also 1 meg for us$50, you are taking advantage, it is about time we get at least 3 meg for that amount of dollars. We need competition.......

G.T & T i was never really a fan on any of your services but this is embarrassing why not give the internet for free i mean your services are totally a waste your modems are full of faults you dsl gets black out times and a whole hosts of other problems now think about this would you people be able to maintain a steady flow of bandwidth with all those users on at one time and with all that packet moving around are you going to provide a secure wireless environment because it got some real talented people in the computer science dept who can embarrass your network and all in all i think you people should provide this service free any why push dsl when when you can invest in fiber optics then you can talk about charging

Vibert you have to blame the people for putting money in their pockets, if people crying out of it expensive all they have to do is don't use it and the majority will make the costs go own.

Sonita you are smarter than this.Mr Singh please pack your bags and go to the house, you do not need to be associated with GT&T.I have the greatest respect for you Mr Singh, not being a Shylock, this is way too far outside the box. Minister of education please do not allow GT&T to bambooze you. The Ministry can buy this service from any provider and give out account pswd to students to use while at ug for a fraction of the cost. GT&T is bent on treating us like mushroom. As you know we grow mushroom in the dark and feed them b/s..Mr Ramotar please have GT&T audited by an international Telecomunicatio n forensic auditor.English or American, the country will benifit from the tax revenue, you would be most elated.

Some internet cafe charge $100.00 per hour to use their service. The cafe owner buys this service from a provider, the provider makes a profit, the internet cafe makes a profit. Why should GT&T charge the same as an internet cafe and they are the ones who provide the service to other ISP to sell. The service should be free as a contribution to the development of the country. The Government need to look into this. The university should not allow the service unless it's free. we are being rob of bandwidth here by GT&T. People that travel to other countries can tell you. The government have to hurry remove the monopoly
