Lance Corporal Ian Blair

A Guyana Defence Force soldier died early Friday morning as a result of a heart attack during the annual fitness run, senior army officials confirmed.

Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) was told that the man has been identified as 28-year old Lance Corporal Eon Blair.

The solider, whose residential address was 305 Number Fifty-One Village Corentyne, Berbice, was a member of the GDF's Intelligence Unit. He was a serving member of the army for nine years, having enlisted in 2004.

Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) was told that Blair complained of chest pain shortly after the five-mile run began.

He was rushed to the GDF's medical centre by an ambulance that had been accompanying the fitness-run.

He was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he succumbed.

One wonders what are the physical requirements that must be met before participating in these fitness runs? What sort of preparation went into this before the actual run. Are these soldier participants all active physically to endure this fitness run? Have they had medical check-ups before they participate in these runs. Surely the military must provide these answers. This is unacceptable and suggests either the soldier had an underlying problem that was not known; he was not properly screened medically or not properly prepared for the rigorous physical exercise. Very sad.

Whoa!!! This tragic event is concurrent with the negative impressions of the GDF and GPF
Joint-Forces against the Guyanese people. I have no sense of remorse for military and para-military personnel. The uniformed forces engaged in too many traumatic actions against the Guyanese people, 1992 - 2012. That's the way I feel about it....

This is very sad. My sympathy to his family and his colleagues at the GDF.
Indeed life is but a vapour.
May his family and colleagues find comfort in God who can give us peace that passeth all understanding.

How long after he complained did he get medical attention? It would be disheartening to learn that he was instructed to continue running after he complained.Aren't they supposed to do routine medicals on all staff in the military so as to determine their fitness and other medical data beforehand?

Once in a while these things happen, in the GDF. The same thing happened to Cpl Rodney "wo-bop" of Jaguar Battalion some years ago. May he rest in peace. He can Join the Int. Corps in hell or heaven

Too many soldiers are dying suddenly from heart attack. Being a member of the intelligence unit. HHHHHMMMMM!! a smell sumn fishy. Many more like that to come. Remember Commission of Enquiry was asked for the worst off violence filled period of our country history from 2002 onwards. Many will not agree with me, but I think not only soldiers will b silenced, but other folks too.

As an Ex.GDF Soldier [Senior Rank] I can never ever remember being medically tested prior to the Annual Fitness Run, and i've done it for 20yrs. I highly recommend that in future,Soldiers be medically tested prior to these exercises. My condolence goes out to the relatives of this young man.

Army fitness runs don't always have this kind of fatal experience, so I will not read anything into this (unless something untoward is later discovered), and hope the army will strive to remain truly professional and ready to defend the borders.

Does the GDF have any medical doctors ? If not , why not? Both the Goat man and commander Best often talk about having a modern force ,but I guess that having qualified medical personal is not part of that equation. These people in the government have very little regard for human life. How sad.

Why was he taken to GDF Medical Centre ? The Center does not have the expertise and equipment to deal with heart issues. Does the Ambulance attendants know how to recognise a heart attack ? I am an Ex soldier. In my time when you go to the Center for an illness, Annand will just look at you and say take some tablets and back to work. Doing PT in the morning is mandatory and if you are too weak to move with the fitter guys, you are barked on to speed up and called a
f----ing lazy c--t.Sad affair in the Army. Army food is cooked in Bulk with no nutrition value attached to it. The pork is cooked and served with the fat and the fat oil can be seen floating on top of the curry pork.Ask cook Ishmael and he will tell you- is he still alive?

For the negative comments a few of you posted, may I suggest you do some research. The GDF has change diet and medical policies for the last 6yrs. Its sad the soldier die.

Thank you all for the condolences. We were told that he did indicate that he was feeling sick and was told to "pick up your F%^@#ing gun and go run". So who really is to be blamed here. The question is asked, why wasn't he sent to the hospital after complaining that he was unwell? Why did the ambulance take him to the GDF medical centre when they were closer to the hospital? What are they trying to cover up. As his family, we intend to get to the bottom of this tragegy. He was ONLY 28 yrs old.

BE QUIET, THESE THINGS HAPPEN ALL OVER THE WORLD, EVERYONE IN THE MILITARY HAS TO BE FIT, ITS A TRAGIC ACCIDENT.Quoting Debra:

Again my people when are you going to get it.This is who we are!The 1st stage of cure for a drug addict is to admit he has a drug habit and seek help willingly.History lesson here, back in my day if you wanted to get into the civil service you needed X amount of GCE or CXE subjects. The more you has the better Ministries you got into. It was a status colonial thing. Don't hate but the less you got the more attractive was the police force then the GDF. Now the cadet officers knowing this were attracted to the ignorance of power and discriminated against the lower ranks, assuming their job was to serve them.Believe it or not the same ignorance prevails today. Hence you have the GDF and The GPF. How on Gods earth you folks expect the Minister to work with this based on his tools is beyond me,last time I checked he was not a God. The Minister is being asked to fetch water uphill in a basket and questioned by you guys as to why he has an empty basket.Look at Apnu we has two leaders who came from the police force and the GDF. Mr Granger and Mr Felix, now do your home work,I rest my case.Could you learned comentators give solutions. I have one for you to mull over, adopt a family member in Guyana or a total stranger and pledge what you can afford, ask your friend/family member to help, honour your pledge,go for the long hall,$10 a week is a good start, hell of a lot,and a positive start.

A soldier must always be fit to run...he does not wake up one day and decide to get into condition to run...The question should be...was he ever treated for his heart condition prior to and after entering the army?
