Lethem Post Office

A security guard at the Region Nine RDC Office in Lethem was killed, several safes there blow-torched and a large sum of cash stolen, police said.

Two persons, including one woman, were Saturday morning intercepted in a car at the Mabura checkpoint. Police said more than GUY4 million were found in the car. The trio has been arrested to assist with the probe.

The cashwas hidden under the rear seat.

The dead watchman has been identified as John Friday of Culvert City, Lethem.

His colleague has been admitted to the Lethem Hospital.

The ordeal began around 8 O'clock Friday night when the two watchmen were attacked, beaten and tied up. Pieces of cloth were stuffed into Friday's mouth.

The two men then broke into the RDC Building and the Post Office, where a cutting torch was used to cut open a total of five safes and an undisclosed sum of money stolen, after which they escaped, police added.

This so sad, Lethem had very little crime. I is troubling to know this type of Crime is happening on Lethem.

The Army would patrol the whole Central Savannah during the night, they new everyone on the local.

I so sorry to hear this......

This is beyond ridiculous! My heart felt to poor man's family. Here is guy obiviosly on minimum wage just trying put on the table instead has met his tragic demise. These sensless killings are occuring too often. The good book says that when those in authority are corrupt lawlessness prevails. It is so true. Not only is this inept goverment plagued by corruption but it is ineffective and weak on crime. How long will the Guyanese people sit on their hands and accept the autrocity?

It seems that everything bad in Guyana gets blamed on the present Govt. This lawlessness started since the days of
Forbes Burnham. Donald Ramoutar should sincerely take notice and make a concerted effort to stamp out the lawlessness. Replace the top brass of the GPF, and get all the criminal GPF members out. But then he will be deemed to be a racist, as most of them are African Guyanese.
There we go again. A two state solution will solve this,I am sure!!

Burglars- does anyone have a different word for these scums? Let's open this as a challenge to all Demwaves contributors. They would do anything including murder, to get their hands on money or other valuables. No place is safe these days, whether in the city or in the rural areas or in the far out areas like Lethem. It would be interesting to know where these beasts are from. Are they local or from other areas of Guyana eg the Coastland. It would appear as if they are not locals as they were heading out in a car which should be checked if it was stolen. It seems as if they knew that that amount of money woud be in those safes at that particular time and that they could have an accomplice from inside. Let's hope the police get this thoroughly investigated with positive results and one must not read the last sentence ''investigations are contiuning'' as in so many previous investigations. Let there be justice.

I agree with CleveM:
Isaiah 1:5 says "When the head is sick, it affects the entire body" The Leadership of Guyana, from the President down, is corrupt and God-less, that's the reason wickedness in all forms presently prevails in the Country, until there's a cleansing of our Leadership, Guyana will continue to grow worse. Have decent, honest people run our Country and Guyana will regain its past status as Leader in the Caribbean.

Crime, criminality and corruption have NEVER been at the current levels so your comparison is without merit!
No one has to deem Ramotar as racist!! He himself has already done so!

Amrit Singh.

You are a racist and a jackaxx. You just assume that you know the race of the ppl who did this.

Law and order, crime and punishment are the responsibility of government. So blame the government ,fool. These criminals knew that money was kept on the premises ant that a blow torch was needed to cut open the safe. Clearly an inside job.

Put pressure on government to find remadies for the tragic events and stop the racist nonsense.
