An Essequibo woman and her three young children are now homeless after her drunken reputed husband allegedly burnt down her house that was built by Food For The Poor, a charitable organisation.

Nelly Sookra alleged that her husband, Matthew Johnson, carried out his threat to set fire to the one-flat wooden house at Queenstown, Essequibo Coast early Friday evening.

Johnson was captured at a nearby eating establishment and could be arraigned early next week on a charge of arson.

Sookra claimed that during an argument, Johnson threw a kerosene lamp on the bed and the house was quickly consumed by the raging flames.

The house was owned by her mother, Raywattie Sookra.

There are numerous cases of domestic violence in Guyana recently. Is due to the cheating or some other social problems? If a woman do not want a man, please tell him and guys just accept. But if you have any financial investment you have to get your share. It goes both ways.

Same old, same old, man continues to treat women as without any worth.

Time for men to rise up and treat women as EQUALS.

So sad, look at those young kids. No one should have to suffer like this. He should be handed down the maximum penalty. Domestic violence is growing rapidly in our beautiful country and destroying us. Leaders you guys have to do something to help arrest this situation.

Similar to what is happening in Parliament today.
After so many years of struggle to bring democracy into Guyana, you now have a generation, most never involded or on the otherside, or know what is hard life, wants to destroy it.

Realest that solution won't solve this ongoing problem. We need all the men of substance and those famous and not so famous men to lend their voices to this issue of domestic violence. We've been to silent on this issue while our women continues to suffer.

What Banks DIH & DDL have to do with a man burning down a house (Guyana baboo).
They have their own problems.

Now I'm convinced it is the Red Rum!! Look what happens when spelt backwards....MURDER!!!! On a serious note though - I have said this over and overagain. This violence against women and children MUST be addressed. It is becoming a way of life which real sad!! Every week a woman is either badly beaten or killed by her husband. This is a National Epidemic.

ok people, red rum yes it is very awful.i was an abuse wife twice.all because of red rum.it does some serious damage to people life.but as for that man don't burn him alive, let him build it back all by him self.within a very short time.then he should be sentence to a couple of years.with hard labor.no one was killed or harm, don't all time blame other people for others act.we all know our intentions before we commit our act,s.

the solution to to the issues of domestic violence lies in a national discourse on the causes. many time we hear people blaming rum, but truth be told "what a drunken tongue / mind revealeth, a sober mind conceiveth" the rum was maybe just used as an enhancing factor for the inner anger. the discourse on the causes of domestic violence must begin with those who have been incarcerated / accused of domestic violence. the social scientists must reach out and compile, then analyse the stories of these people then Guyanese as a nation must begin to work toward finding relevant solutions.

What is happening in my peaceful county Essequibo Coast? Seems couples everywhere cannot cope with stress in their relationships and resort to either drinking poison or destruction and give no thought for their children. Hope this family's life is built back and the husband pays for his crime. Thank God no one is killed or hurt.

All I'm seeing is "REPUTED HUSBAND & 'REPUTED WIFE', COMMON LAW HUSBAND &
"COMMON LAW WIFE". There's no such thing except in Guyana where it is used as an excuse not to commit to a marriage. Maybe that's why these guys have no respect for the women because the women have no respect for themselves. They're not marrying anymore, they just 'tek-up'.

The issue is not substance abuse or stress or gender conflict it is just that we have lost our way morally, spiritually and we fail to or cannot, think logically and clearly (this also applies to KBaksh, What is democracy? For sure it is not a word that is shouted and it happens; nor is it just regular elections among multiple parties who eventually occupy parliament!!!). We live in an age where there is greater premium for being "bad", doing the unacceptable and winning approbation because of money gained. WE LIVE IN A CORRUPT CULTURE!

When you see early signs of domestic violence, just kick him to the curb. Or if you want to take the gamble, then blame yourself for the long term consequences.

This scum is the epitome of selfishness. I am happy that all are alive. Women, have the courage to leave these violent relationships especially when you have children. The last thing you want to do is expose the kids to these kinds of behaviors. I hope that the Government will provide more resources to domestic violence.
