university_of_guyanaThe University of Guyana Students Society (UGSS) is coming to the rescue of the cash-strapped tertiary institution to help improve the physical infrastructure at the Turkeyen Campus.

UGSS President Ganesh Mahipaul said a debate square is to be constructed at an estimated cost of GUY$900,000. Plans are also in train to build a wide bridge for vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the southern end of the campus.

Currently, there is a small bridge from the campus to Dennis Street, Sophia. Mahipaul explained that the proposed bridge and asphalting of a roadway from aback the Faculty of Technology is part of a plan to make the southern gateway an exit to the campus. The Cummings Lodge gate would be used as the exit only, he said.

Mahipaul said approval has been already granted by the University of Guyana administration for the southern gate to be upgraded and designated the exit.

He said funds for the two projects would be raised at a Mashramani event dubbed ‘Campus Bubblin’ scheduled for February 16 from 3 PM. International performers- international performers Shal Marshal and the Karma Band- are due to take to the stage at the UoG campus.

The UGSS said it has teamed up with Team Suga Entertainment in order to fulfil its mandate "to foster and promote social and cultural activities among students of the University."

Through the effort of the UGSS and Team Suga in collaboration with companies such as Banks DIH ( who have supported us throughout the academic year), travellers Sound System, Hotel Tower, White Castle Fish Shop, Giftland OfficeMax and Scott's Jewellery, the student body said it remains committed to promoting and developing student life at our University.

“The admin does not have money and so we are coming up with our own initiatives,” said the UGSS President.

A "debate square" very nice. I will put my organization on notice to provide for a trophy on Culture and development.

I will love to see a debate of this type taken across the ten Regions of Guyana.

This is such a disgrace for Guyana. Our government was quick to find money to finance the construction of the marriott hotel but they cannot find money to upgrade the facilities at our only university.

Part of the blame for this problem of finance at the university rests with the UGSS itself.Their support for this corrupt regime is yet to bear friut.Student movements all over the world have always advocated for the advancement of either the institution or the students themselves. Student movements generally resort to public rallies ,protest and demonstrations to pressure government or the administration to have their demands met.But here in Guyana university student have become like sheep. Not only are they passive but they seem not to know what their priorities are and what action to take. The UGSS has allowed itself to become so partisan in national politics that now in a matter of great importance to the university and the students that organisation has to resort to what is no less than public begging and charity. And the government is not being made to live up to its financial obligations to the university.

DW I am confused. Will their be one entrance and one exit? Which, south or north? How will all this traffic be accommodated in a limited carriage way? Consider the added Forensic Lab traffic, the usual traffic and now an enhance UG traffic on the Dennis Street Carriage way. Have their been consultations with commuters and motor service providers? Let us get things done the right way, please UGSS President.

Benuriah or whatever if you aren't a Ug student you won't understand. Also its not the Ug students responsibility to build that lab. Yhe government doesn't have our best interests in hand . In addition, tax payers money are wastedto bring in foreign professionals because they fail to invest in their own people. Besides all u seem to say is a bunch of BS! No wonder why you are so confused.

The bridge on the south side is a great idea, but why a oneway bridge,I have a suggestion why not get proper bids for the bridge, submit a buis. plan to a friendly bank, the plan should show that you plan to charge a toll for the use of the bridge, you should not break down the old bridge as this would be a conflict, the toll should only be there to pay off the loan and expences not a profit, you can sell electronic passes and ask that Ug provide a guard to ensure proper use and safety. The bridge can also have a solar remote camera with a recorder.solicit donations from the buis. comunity for this bridge,It will save time, gas and wear and tear on vehicles.Best of luck

I must remind you, you are beating a dead snake. Preserve your energy for another Social observation.

Ethnic division has come to be a well know fuel in Guyana for the success and movement of some project that benefit a few but in this life corrections are made in mysterious ways. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQQyIj-wDyg

Moral Leadership will change the way Guyana do things.......
