crimesceneA mentally ill man, who had allegedly damaged property and exposed himself indecently, was shot and injured after he attacked police when they attempted to arrest him, the Guyana Police Force said in a statement.

The incident occurred around 5 O’clock Thursday morning when police went to the home of  38-year old Leon Alphonso of Danielstown, Essequibo Coast.

“During efforts to apprehend him, Leon Alphonso attacked the police with a cutlass and a claw bar causing the police to resort to the use of force and he was shot to his left foot,” said police spokesman Ivelaw Whittaker.

Police said they were responding to reports alleged damage to property, assault, threatening behaviour and indecent exposure made against Alphonso.

He was taken to the Suddie Hospital where he was treated and sent away. He is in police custody. Investigations are in progress, police said.

Ok this is a case in point ,I am quite sure this person is known to be of unsound mind so even if the police was called to his home why cant they approach with caution why do they have to used force to subdue, that is why they need well train policemen and women who are trained in all areas of police work one been mental health issues its time we stop useing force for everything its like when you go to a doctor regardless of what you tell him,or her they give you pain tablets some times before you finish talking they are writing the prescription when will we improve another hundred years in any case nothing better is expected because of who we have as the minister of home affairs a man who did not finish school, who used to hang out at the famous globe yard ,who only means of income was looking at your bicycle when you go to the movie goes to show if you are friends with the right people in guyana anything can happen you can become the president one day, hope this man get the help he need instead of another bullit, guyana.

At least the police was smart enough to just shoot this mentally ill person in the foot to stop him and did not aim to kill him. That alone is commendable..Unlike in the United States, where the cops just shoot to kill., regardless of the situation.

Would u defend yourself as an officer in these circumstances, if being on the verge of getting hacked to death, when it is well within your right to do so? One of sound mind has to remember that the unsound mind is very unpredictable.

come on guys, the use of a gun was not necessary in this case. Get a stunner to subdue the guy.

The Officer did the right thing. Some people criticize the police just for the sake of criticism. Over the years many officers have been injured by persons of unsound mind. None of these matters are carried in the press.

In the face of extreme danger, the police acted in self defence and probably deliberately shot him in the leg.It could have been worse had he been shot elsewhere. Sometimes force is necessary for the greater good. However, anyone having to feel the pain of a bullet is not something I would be happy about
