Transport Minister Robeson Benn
Transport minister Robeson Benn has indicated that passengers of the flopped EZjet airline may have to settle for partial refunds of their monies. He told reporters on Thursday that his ministry was currently scrubbing the list of passengers to be refunded which it had received from the airline’s office in Georgetown. “I must say that there is a much greater call on the monies available than there is money in the bond, there are more claimants for refunds than the bond could have anticipated and so there may be the situation of partial refunds for passengers,” he said. Asked whether the government would consider chipping in to meet the shortfall Benn stated there was currently no position on that. The refunding process was transferred to the government after the airline failed to raise the cash to reimburse passengers who had already booked flights prior to its suspension by US and Guyanese authorities in November. The airline had been required to lodge a US$200,000 bond with the government and it is that money which will be used to refund passengers who purchased tickets in Guyana. Benn had told Demerara Waves Online News in December that they were looking to complete the refunds by March month end. EZjet’s licences were suspended following financial difficulties encountered with its founder and CEO Sonny Ramdeo who is now in custody in the United States. He has been accused of embezzling as much as US$20 million from as early as 2005 from Promise Healthcare Inc. and Success Healthcare Group, where he worked as the payroll supervisor. Ramdeo had managed the payroll for more than 3,500 employees in hospitals across the US. |

It is very disrespectful to not fully reimburse every passenger that was affected. I think all visitors and tourists should stay away from Guyana for a while to send a message that they are fed up waiting for the government to get their act together. They should cut down the money that is sent there by half to emphasize the level of seriousness. Let business slow down for a while so those private business leaders will finally do the right thing and speak up and most importantly act and demand a better society from their government.
Pertaining to scanning visitors' suitcases. Atleast the products that are brought in by the 'suitcase traders' are the real thing or a better quality than the chinese fake and poor quality products that have flooded the Guyanese market. Do you get value for your money when you buy cheap chinese products that break up in a short while?
Do government ministers pay the same duty like everyone else, or do they get tax free this and tax free that, or able to pass things in taxfree basically because of their government affiliation? If so, what makes them so special, afterall, they just represent us, not rule us or master us as slaves?
The government is just finding snakeish ways to get money to fill their pockets or replace the money that they used to fill their pockets.
Why is VAT so high and the get all those duty free concessions? Why are they stealing taxpayers money or money from loans or paying themselves so much money to build mansions when a patriotic person would have fixed the infrastruture of the country or pursue job creating endeavours for the out of work masses?
High taxes are the government's way of legally robbing its hard working citizens. Why do government ministers and advisors get so much money for bad management and advice, whilst poor people and children cannot even get an honest chance to better themselves and their livelihood? Why would visitors and tourists want to come to a country where crime is extremely high and even the police who are suppose to protect you from it are sometimes the ones involved in it? Why doesn't the government stop showing their incompetence and actually make valiant effort to get this under control?
Tourism and crime are closely interlinked, why don't they see that?
