Joshua Hubbard and his father, Orin.

An eight-year old student of St. Margaret’s Primary School, whose ambition was to become a President of Guyana, died apparently due to internal injury he sustained when a classmate pushed him down for a rose that he had bought for his mother on Valentine’s Day.

“He used to say ‘Daddy I would be the next president of Guyana and I will make the place clean, everything, and he was doing so well in school because this term he even topped the class,” said a sobbing Orin Hubbard.

Joshua Hubbard awoke around 1:30 Friday morning, complaining of severe headache. A clearly depressed Orin said his son’s eyes were rolling and his daughter, who is studying nursing, later checked his pulse but there was no beat.

“We rubbed his face with Limacol and afterwards he calmed down and afterwards his eyes start turn up,” he said.

Orin said he rushed his son to Woodlands Hospital where the lad was hooked up to medical equipment and later pronounced dead.

Even as family members await an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Orin said he learnt from a school teacher that an identifiable classmate, who was absent from school on Friday, had pushed down Joshua on Thursday.

It is unclear whether the boy’s surviving siblings and parents would know exactly what transpired because no one is willing to testify. “The children who see don’t want to come forward and say what really take place,” said Orin.

He said he learnt that the classmate had been apparently pursuing Orin for the rose that he had purchased to give his mother for Valentine’s Day when he returned home from school. “He had this rose that he bought for his Mom and this boy like he had wanted the rose and because he can’t get it, he decided to push him,” said the man

The man said his son never complained of pains although he related that he had been pushed down but the boy never apologised.

The father, who works with Windjammer Hotel and Catering Service, said when Joshua returned home he played with the children in the yard, had a bath, ‘head-up’ his books for Friday’s school and retired to bed.“He go to bed and the only time he wake up is when he wake up and start screaming,” he said.

Bully is a serious problem in our schools This should bring that problem into focus.
My comment is not sarcasm or decrying Guyana in anyway bullying in schools is universal and should be addressed. my sympathy to the parent of this child

Another son killed, another family pushed into an ocean of uncomforted pain. This again, originated at an 'institute of learning'. Five years ago today, my son, Dennis Edghill(JR) met his demise in a similar fashion, to date, his murderer walks free while our judiciary turns a blind eye. My heart and prayers go out to the grieving family; may God give you the strength and peace needed for such a time as this.

Seems to be an act of bullism that is worth investigating to prevent future occurences in all schools.

Condolences to Orin and Family.

Oh, yes you can die from a push. It depends where you hit or how hard you fell. There is internal bleeding and trauma to the heart or other organs that can occur from a fall. Hope the other children who saw what happened come forward. Parents you let your kids do what is right and speak out. IT COULD HAVE BEEN YOUR KID INSTEAD OF JOSHUA...then you would want other kids to come forward. My deepest sympathy to the parents and other relatives during this sad time. May his soul R.I.P

unfortunately, the issue of bullying has not caught on in guyana. the lifelong implications/consequences for these children are seemingly not being addressed. the min of ed should strongly look into training and installing schools both private and public, with school counselors or have teachers trained to recognise a bully and how to cope with this type of issue. deepest sympathy to the parents for their loss......

This is a failure of authority. People who have authority are obligated to investigate and deal appropriately with all complaints, regardless of how trivial they may appear. If we fail to listen to the complaints of aggrieved persons, we give bullies the upper hand, with this result or people will seek to take justice in their own hands. Also, parents who fail to discipline their children are letting monsters loose into the society. I grieve for this family.

Education Department get into schools and learn about the BLOODS and CRISPZ gangs that is detroying our youths. How many more youths have to pay the price of DEATH BEFORE OUR POLITICIANS GET AND DO SOMETHING POSITIVE TO SAVE OUR FUTURE LEADERS. RIP jOSHUA lets us remember the Hubbards in our prayers.

Valentine is for gullible lovers to the advantage of mercantile class:Mother and son's love has nothing to do with valentine-- teachers must fortwith stop this nonsense by pressurising to buy gifts for parents-- not all can afford and here yu see one who could not get a rose to be accepted by the norms of society, what they can resort to-- Teachers should start TEACHING WISDOM and not be manipuilated by media and commerce- my sympathy to the boy and his whole family

First my condolences to the entire family I feel your pain.
Please don't let this child die in vain. Highlight bullying for what it is in all schools. Open a foundation in his name so children will know what can be the end result of this ugly thing we call "bullying".
I hope the Ministry of Education does an investigation into what really happen that day. It is their responsibility to do so.
Parents always follow up on your children's complaints it may just save a life.

many do not understand or take for granted the act or bullying. The bully is usually another child or group of childen who would later gravitate to criminal activity. Politicians or teacher or 'authorities' are not to blame but the issue needs to be collectively addressed by the community as a whole. children are bullied for several different reasons .The issue has to be seriously addressed

This is a really sad situation. I extend condolences to the Hubbard's family and i pray that peace would reign.
We as parents need to take a stand and not let the government decide 4 us. Being Copy cats and not putting things in place so violence is now the results.
Don't spare the rod and spoil the child, corporal punishment should not be abolished in schools.
Quote

0 #55 Denis Ward 2013-02-17 16:45
@sher using the rod can spoil the child as well.Beating could have the worst effect on a child. I have a friend who build a trash house in the cane fields and stayed there during school hours because he was afraid of being beaten by a class teacher. I was a teacher in mt early years of employment and never beat. I am proud of the career paths that many of those i taught have taken (not that i take all the credit for that)
I will remember the Hubbard child died from a possible bullying act by his contemporary. i hope some very appropriate action is taken to avoid re occurance
