Guyanese Public Health Specialist, Dr. Rudolph Cummings is mission by the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to make preparations for the establishment of treatment centres to fight the cholera epidemic. 

The team will also undertake site visits of the proposed clinics at Fonds Verrette and Thomazeu. Caricom said in a statement.

The treatment centres are to be manned by Caricom volunteers. Guyana’s Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has said that Guyana would be willing to supply oral rehydration salts and consider requests for medical staff. 

“It is expected that the team will meet with Haitian Health officials and other organizations involved in the battle against the epidemic,” according to the Caricom headquarters.,

Cummings, who is the Programme Manager for Health Sector Development at the Caricom headquarters, is accompanied by Dr. Melody Ennis of the Ministry of Health, Jamaica and Major Kirk Johnson of the Jamaica Defence Force. Cummings is a former Chief Medical Officer of Guyana

At least 3,000 lives have been lost to the epidemic in the French Creole-speaking country which is yet to recover from the now almost one-year old earthquake.
