As the flood waters in Lethem and other parts of Region Nine continue to recede, authorities are turning their attention to Kwakwani where flood waters have forced some residents to flee their homes.

With flood waters rising by as much as 12 inches in the Lamp Island and Water Fort area of Kwakwani, the Health Ministry said it has “obtained additional supplies to maintain readiness.”

The Hydromet Office has grim tidings for Lethem and other flood-hit Region 9 communities saying heavy rains are forecast to continue for another week over southern Guyana.

Acting Chief Hydromet Officer Garvin Cummings and agriculture minister Robert Persuad on Monday provided reporters with an update on the flood situation from an agriculture perspective at the minister’s Vlissengen and Regent Roads office.

A flooded street in Lethem

Electricity supply was Sunday night restored to flood-ravaged Lethem, even as authorities activated an emergency system to aid stricken residents many of whom have been evacuated to higher ground.

Residents told demwaves.com that there is still no potable water and residents are relying on bottled and rain water collected in tanks. Two of three wells cannot be used.
