fingerprintAs preparations steam ahead for Guyanese to go vote for a government of their choice before year-end, the Guyana Elections Commission has dispatched thousands more fingerprints overseas to be cross-matched and has begun training Field Managers.

A well-placed GECOM source told Demerara Waves Online News ( www.demwaves.com ) that approximately 16,700 fingerprints captured during the May 9 to June 12 Claims and Objections period.

Guyana’s health minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy says sexual and reproductive health must be given more priority on the development agenda if people’s lives are to be bettered.

He made the comment on Monday at a consensus meeting on Guyana’s Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Strategic Plan 2011-2020 at the Cara Lodge in Georgetown.

The Ministry of Health is looking to achieve some 90 percent of recurring voluntary blood donors in order to meet a 10,000 unit collection target set for this year.

The National Blood Transfusion Service on Tuesday launched World Blood Donors Day with the release of 90 red balloons at its Lamaha and East Streets compound in recognition of the 90 percent target.

Health minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy on Thursday called for the revamping of Guyana’s public health law saying modern legislation was needed to ensure the effective implementation of international health regulations.

His comment came at a sensitization workshop for port health authorities aimed at raising awareness of the International Health Regulations (IHR) in order to assist the health ministry in surveillance activities.
