It staretd when Pt. Reepu Daman Persaud founded the Dharmic Sabha(1975/76) after the Maha Sabha stopped attending to the cultural, religious, festival celebration needs of the Hindus of Guyana.

Thanks for sharing the beautiful Deepavali/Diwali float parade which has grown remarkably over the years.
I take this opportunity to Wish all Guyanese, Visitors, Relatives and Friends, a Wonderful and Happy Diwali. May the evils that pervade the communities, the fears and trauma some have experienced, be dispelled and Guyanese embrace the 'spirit' of this occasion living in Unity and Peace. Let the earthen lamps (deeyas)brighte n our hearts and restore Goodwill to All. God Bless Guyana!

Alfredmarshall, it started in the PNC Tenure!

I don't think this ocassion has anything to with with politics, Roger Moore. So whether it started under the PNC, the PPP, or who pp on whom is not of relevance here. For the seventeen years I spent growing up in Guyana, my family always celebrated Diwali as a wonderful NATIONAL holiday. It's part of the GUYANESE culture, regardless of partisan affiliation, ethnicity, or religious persuation. I join Dharamdeo in extending a Happy and Joyful Diwali to my country peops! May Jah Almighty bless us all!

Alfred Marshall. This is nothing new. These things were always there in my 59 years of living inside and outside of Guyana. What part of Guyana did you growup and live my friend ?.

I wish if the country (GUYANA) was as Bright and Colourful as these pictures, what a mess this PPP administration made of this country.

One of the great things about Guyana is that we all (no matter what religion) partake in and rejoice in every celebration. Thank you for sharing these beautiful pictures I would like to wish everyone a Happy Diwali

@Peter Jacobs & Roger Moore
Why would you bring politics in this discussion?? There is a time & place for everything.

The original question has to do with it being so colourful with lights and parade now. Perhaps it is the times and the better economic times (and the flow from families abroad who contribute back to their home country). I too was very impressed with this parade.
I also agree that the Maha Sabha became a bit dormant in the 1970s and indeed Pt. Reepu was instrumental in reviving this celebration. And look how greater it is now! Happy Diwali to all my brothers and sisters - Guyana and abroad.
