The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) on Wednesday said it has received reports that there are members of the disciplined services who have not yet been registered in order to vote at the general election later this year even as the period to do so is ending.

According to a statement read by the party’s campaign manager, Joseph Harmon, a retired army officer, the reports further claim that the heads of these services have not made adequate arrangements to facilitate the registration process.

“Because of the structure of these services, party activists have been unable to ascertain the accuracy of these reports. However, it is the responsibility of the discipline services, in particular, the Army and Police, to ensure that all their enlisted personnel are registered,” Harmon said.

He added that it was in their interactions with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) that they needed to ensure that those arrangements allow for the fullest exercise of their franchises in the upcoming elections.

A senior army source told demwaves.com when contacted that “the GDF has a list and we are perusing same to determine who are not on it.”

Police commissioner Henry Greene could not be immediately reached for a comment on the reports.

The GECOM Commissioners on Tuesday voted not to extend the Claims and Objections exercise under which late registration could be facilitated. The period for claims ends on Thursday while objections will be heard until June 12. A one-week period will be set aside afterwards for hearings into any claims and objections.
