The Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) is the latest political party to have rushed relief-supplies to flood-affected Lethem.

PNCR presidential candidate, David Granger, accompanied by party youth-arm chairman, Christopher Jones, were Wednesday morning distributing toiletries, bottled water and other items to persons who are housed in shelters.

There are more than 260 persons are housed in schools, churches and a community centre, having fled the flood water caused by extreme rainfall in the highlands of Brazil and Guyana.

A party official told demwaves.com that residents told Granger and Jones that “initially no relief was coming from the PPP/C's regional representatives.”

She said they complained of too long delays, a problem that was resolved only after the arrival of Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds at the weekend.

Granger’s arrival came one day after the governing Peoples Progressive Party Civic’s (PPPC) presidential candidate led a team to the Rupununi with a quantity of food supplies.

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has reported that the water is receding, making way for more health and sanitation interventions.

Prominent businessman, Gerry Gouveia praised the work of the CDC in relief efforts. “The CDC has really ramped up itself for this emergency… I am actually quite pleased and impressed with the work of the CDC,” he told demwaves.com

Teams of relief, agriculture, health and regional administrative personnel have been deployed to assist flood-stricken residents.

Authorities are said to be working feverishly to repair sections of the Lethem-Linden road as well as culverts and bridges along the way so that supplies of food and fuel can be rushed to the affected scattered communities before stocks run out by weekend.

If the repairs are not completed on time, businesses intend to buy supplies from Boa Vista, Brazil.
