Four prisoners, including two murder accused, Saturday morning escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison and up to Saturday morning none had been recaptured, police and prison sources told demwaves.com

The escapees include Kevin “Long Hair” Narine who was less than two weeks ago sentenced to nine years imprisonment for armed robbery at sea, and Rickford La Fleur who was incarcerated for murder and drug trafficking.

Prison authorities believe the escape occurred around 2:30 AM but it was not discovered until 6:45 AM.

Prison sources told demwaves.com that initial observations revealed that the prisoners removed boards leading from one cell to two others and then entered the yard where they ripped open the fence.

At the time Narine was charged, tough piracy laws were not yet enacted.

The full details of the escapees and their alleged and convicted offences are:

(a)    Kevin Narine called “Long Hair”, 32 years of No. 7 Village, WCB, who was serving a sentence of 9 years for robbery under arms.

(b)   Vijay Seenarine, 33 years of Little India, Skeldon, Corentyne, who was remanded to prison on a charge of Carnal Knowledge.

(c)    Rickford La Fleur known as Rickford Williams, 35 years of Circle Street, Skeldon, and Vryheid’s Lust Squatting Area, ECD, who was
remanded to prison on two charges of murder and two charges of trafficking in narcotics.

(d)   Vinood Gopual, 19 years of 34 Yakasari, Black Bush Polder, Berbice, who was remanded to prison on a charge of murder.

Law enforcement officials on Saturday raised concerns about the quality of security at the New Amsterdam Prison, noting that the prison escape followed the recent exit of Surinamese convicted rice farmer, Paul Doerga, to Nickerie in the company of a uniformed prison officer.

Doerga was serving a three-year sentence for issuing a bounced cheque. Prison Officer Orland Jaundoo has been charged in connection with the offence.

Police and prison officers have, aaccording to sources, been deployed to several New Amsterdam areas as well as the backlands of Canje.

Long Hair Narine is said to have family and other ties in neighbouring Suriname and French Guiana.
