Law enforcement officials on Saturday raised concerns about the quality of security at the New Amsterdam Prison, noting that the prison escape followed the recent exit of Surinamese convicted rice farmer, Paul Doerga, to Nickerie in the company of a uniformed prison officer. Doerga was serving a three-year sentence for issuing a bounced cheque. Prison Officer Orland Jaundoo has been charged in connection with the offence. Police and prison officers have, aaccording to sources, been deployed to several New Amsterdam areas as well as the backlands of Canje. Long Hair Narine is said to have family and other ties in neighbouring Suriname and French Guiana. |
