A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)- a coalition of at least five political parties- on Friday formally announced its establishment to contest the 2011 general election.

Coming months after most of them had been operating under the banner of the loosely knit Joint Opposition Political Parties (JOPP), APNU formally unveiled its symbols.

Demerara Waves (www.demwaves.com ) was told by well-placed sources that either the palm of the hand with the map of Guyana or the palm with the symbols of the coalition parties will be placed on the ballot paper.

APNU, at the intended news conference that was held at the Pegasus Hotel, only answered three questions, instead opting to give details about the prime ministerial candidate and other issues at the formal launch slated for July 8. APNU has, however, already agreed that David Granger of the main opposition Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) will be its presidential candidate.

You can listen to a podcast of the news conference by clicking the green play-button:

Former contenders for the PNCR presidential candidacy were present. They are Carl Greenidge, Faith Harding, Basil Williams and James Bond.
